Triangulations and Applications (Mathematics and Visualization) Review

Triangulations and Applications (Mathematics and Visualization)
Average Reviews:

This is an outstanding book. It is clearly written and goes into great detail. There is source code available that is very well designed and clearly commented. (search for Triangulation Template Library) There are ample illustrations to help you visualize the algorithms.
It is a short book but very complete. It has an academic flavor with definitions, theorems, lemmas and extensive references. There are exercises at the end of the chapters so it was designed to be useful as a textbook for a college computer science course.
I bought it to learn the algorithms and techniques on my own, with an eye toward applying them in geometric modeling for computer games. I found it easy to follow and skipped many of the proofs on the first reading. There are several code snippets throughout the text, some are give in pseudo-code and other are C++. They use OpenGL and GLUT to demonstrate the use of the library. The triangulation library is C++ and not directly tied to OpenGL and should be applicable to Direct3D or other graphics APIs.

Data Model Patterns: A Metadata Map (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Data Management Systems)

This book is great stuff for Enterprise Architects. The discussion of Zachman is better than any of the Zachman Institues articles. The explanation of the value of architectural meta-models is excellent.
On the down side, the meta-models presented are very good EXCEPT that the author still presents data as being a part of an application. Surely 20 or so years after James Martin we are past that. Applications with their own data schemata are to be avoided and suppressed, rather than endorsed.
If your are a "real" Enterprise Architect, then this is book indispensable, but review all of the meta-models carefully to insure that they comply with your particular religion.

In recent years, companies and government agencies have come to realize that the data they use represent a significant corporate resource, whose cost calls for management every bit as rigorous as the management of human resources, money, and capital equipment. With this realization has come recognition of the importance to integrate the data that has traditionally only been available from disparate sources. An important component of this integration is the management of the "metadata" that describe, catalogue, and provide access to the various forms of underlying business data. The "metadata repository" is essential keeping track both of the various physical components of these systems, but also their semantics. What do we mean by "customer?" Where can we find information about our customers? After years of building enterprise models for the oil, pharmaceutical, banking, and other industries, Dave Hay has here not only developed a conceptual model of such a metadata repository, he has in fact created a true enterprise data model of the information technology industry itself. * A comprehensive work based on the Zachman Framework for information architecture-encompassing the Business Owner's, Architect's, and Designer's views, for all columns (data, activities, locations, people, timing, and motivation)* Provides a step-by-step description of model and is organized so that different readers can benefit from different parts* Provides a view of the world being addressed by all the techniques, methods and tools of the information processing industry (for example, object-oriented design, CASE, business process re-engineering, etc.)* Presents many concepts that are not currently being addressed by such tools - and should be

A Cage Of Bones Review

A Cage Of Bones
Average Reviews:

Sexy and intelligent novel mixing fashion with politics.
Jeffrey Round's A Cage of Bones follows the experiences of Warden, a Toronto gay man who makes it big on the catwalks of Europe. I found Round's writing to be both seductive and insightful. The novel reveals a writer whose life experience has enriched his outlook on life; someone who is now in a position to share some of this with his readers. Round's novel is permeated by this sense of confidence and strong moral vision.
A Cage of Bones is A Room with a View for the gay 90s. It is hilariously funny but its social and political philosophy is astute. The fashion and alternative rock worlds, the two main settings for the novel, are described with meticulous but loving details.
Highly recommended.

First published in England to international acclaim in 1997, Jeffrey Round's classic novel, A Cage of Bones, now appears in a new edition. At the beginning of the '90s, an ingenuous young Torontonian named Warden Fields is persuaded to work as a model in Europe's fashion capitals.Italy revels in the opulent splendour of designers like Versace and Ferré, while England is still reeling from the anarchic punk revolution of a decade before. In Italy, Warden is introduced to a world of sensuality and passion, while his relationship with an underground British rock star draws him into illegal political intrigue.Sensitive and subtle, this finely crafted novel weaves together tragic and comic themes in a moving story as its protagonist goes from pop culture icon, through pariah to liberated spirit.

Risk Analysis of Complex and Uncertain Systems (International Series in Operations Research & Management Science) Review

Risk Analysis of Complex and Uncertain Systems (International Series in Operations Research and Management Science)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent, approachable read for any risk manager; understanding its examples requires only elementary probability, statistics and calculus, though the foundations are much deeper. The author uses direct language, and does not hesitate to declare a fashionable risk analysis technique "worse than useless." The author shows how not to do risk analysis, using simple but devastating examples to illustrate the weaknesses of prioritized investments, subject matter expert opinion, risk matrices and qualitative risk assessments, and the independence assumption. Then, case studies present constructive examples of good practice. Refreshingly, this text clearly distinguishes between threats from Mother Nature, and those posed by an intelligent adversary. There is unevenness, because this is an edited ensemble of papers originally published in a variety of technical journals; however, this is also a strength, because the appeal and scholarship underlying biological, engineering, and social science examples is broad. This is not a how-to guide, and won't help fill in a blank page risk analysis; however, this is an excellent source for the skeptical consumer of contemporary risk management advice and products, and hopefully will have some influence with policy makers who are the source of simplistic and dangerous guidance.

In Risk Analysis of Complex and Uncertain Systems acknowledged risk authority Tony Cox shows all risk practitioners how Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) can be used to improve risk management decisions and policies. It develops and illustrates QRA methods for complex and uncertain biological, engineering, and social systems - systems that have behaviors that are just too complex to be modeled accurately in detail with high confidence - and shows how they can be applied to applications including assessing and managing risks from chemical carcinogens, antibiotic resistance, mad cow disease, terrorist attacks, and accidental or deliberate failures in telecommunications network infrastructure. This book was written for a broad range of practitioners, including decision risk analysts, operations researchers and management scientists, quantitative policy analysts, economists, health and safety risk assessors, engineers, and modelers.

SystemC: From the Ground Up, Second Edition Review

SystemC: From the Ground Up, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a good book on SystemC, but it is not a good book for beginners. The book is overly complicated and provides levels of detail in its examples that are unnecessary to make the point or teach the subject.
For example, when discussing ports the book says the following:
DEFINITION: A SystemC interface is an abstract class that inherits from sc_interface and provides only pure virtual declarations of methods referenced by SystemC channels and ports. No implements or data are provided in a SystemC interface.
DEFINITION: A SystemC channel is a class that implements one or more SystemC interface classes and inherits from either sc_channel or sc_prim_channel. A channel implements all the methods of the inherited interface classes.
DEFINITION: A SystemC port is a class templated with and inheriting from a SystemC interface. Ports allow access of channels across module boundaries.
Huh?
This line of teaching led me into the bowels of SystemC and was unnecessary as a start. One can just say, "A port allows communication between blocks. Let's look at sc_in and sc_out to start".
I needed to get another book to recover from this instruction.
The examples in the book are generally OK and there is a website that has executable versions. Unfortunately, there needed to be more careful editing in the examples. The HelloWorld example has an obvious syntax error (an undeclared module is instantiated) and would never have run if it had been compiled.
I could not find the video mixer example that they used to teach ports on the web, and thus couldn't make progress.
Overall, this is a good book if you know SystemC and are interested in the details of how it is implemented. I would use it to learn the language, and it cannot act as a language reference guide.

Hidden Markov Models in Finance (International Series in Operations Research & Management Science) Review

Hidden Markov Models in Finance (International Series in Operations Research and Management Science)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hidden Markov Models have come into vogue in recent years in various fields. Notably automatic speech recognition. An HMM is useful in a Bayesian context, where you have to work back from some observations to discern an underlying probability model that is supposedly generating those observations. Often in the presence of noise. Well, it turns out that this general description can also be applied to financial models, which is the book's subject.
Various specific models are tackled. Including the seminal Black-Scholes, where the security market is modelled as a Markov modulated Brownian. Typically, the maths in the book uses sophisticated probabilistic analysis and often assuming Markov processes. As an aside, if your field is electrical engineering or information theory, where you might have used Markov processes, then your background should suffice if you want to migrate to finance. It's not that different, at a certain conceptual level.
The book could be improved by the addition of an index.

Healthcare Informatics: Improving Efficiency and Productivity Review

Healthcare Informatics: Improving Efficiency and Productivity

With a real need for "healthcare informatics", this is an excellent book and a must read...
"As a 20+ year healthcare IT professional working specifically on electronic health record (EHR) applications as well as the ongoing analysis of this data, I have come to realize the immense problems the healthcare industry is facing today because of the ongoing proliferation of data. With the seemingly endless stream of patient, doctor, healthcare provider, insurance company, and drug manufacture data, the industry has created a real void as well as an opportunity to tap into the huge data store in an attempt to bring real positive change regarding needed efficiencies to the industry. I have found that being able to frame this real life problem has been a challenge until reading Dr. Stephen Kudyba's excellent text "Healthcare Informatics: Improving Efficiency and Productivity".
I was amazed at how quickly and precisely Dr. Kudyba's text not only framed the problem but discussed possible solutions to tackling the problem as well as provided real life examples of applications and processes in use today which are addressing the problem head-on. He does a great job of going beyond theory to actual practice by identifying informatics applications that have been incorporated by healthcare organizations. Two examples in particular from the book which resonated with me was the example of an informatics project that turned a healthcare system's paper-based resources into digital assets as well as the example of the E-commerce self-service patient check-in application which was implemented at a New Jersey hospital. Honestly its one thing to discuss problems and propose possible solutions, but Dr Kudyba's book goes beyond that by identifying "real" solutions in use today.
Lastly, I found that this text serves as a groundbreaking, foundational textbook for a potential graduate course in healthcare data informatics. We cannot ignore the fact that informatics is at the heart of correcting many of the "ills" in healthcare, and because of this, Dr Kudyba's book is a must read!

This book gives a state-of-the-art overview of modeling growth and form of marine sessile organisms - such as stromatolites, algae, and metazoans including stony corals, hydrocorals, octocorals, and sponges -, using large-scale computing techniques, scientific visualization, methods for analyzing 2D and 3D forms, and particle-based modeling techniques. It originates from the workshop on Modeling Growth and Form of Marine Sessile Organisms, held at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, Santa Barbara, California, August 1999. Experts from various disciplines including developmental biology, ecology, computer science, physics and mathematics, who have research interests in modeling the development of these organisms have been invited to contribute. The book describes all the steps required to develop and experimentally validate morphological models including collecting biological information and methods for specifying and comparing forms. Examples are given of how models are currently being applied to simulate growth and form of marine sessile organisms. Potential applications of growth models and morphological analyses in modern and paleo-bio-monitoring, the detection of environmental change, and the conservation and restoration of marine ecosystems and aquaculture are addressed. The combination of simulation models with laboratory and field experiments provides a powerful tool to obtain insights on how the growth forms of marine organisms emerge from physical, genetic and environmental influences.

This book aims to provide insight and practical illustrations on how modern statistical concepts and regression methods can be applied in medical prediction problems, including diagnostic and prognostic outcomes. Many advances have been made in statistical approaches towards outcome prediction, but these innovations are insufficiently applied in medical research. Old-fashioned, data hungry methods are often used in data sets of limited size, validation of predictions is not done or only in a simplistic way, and updating of already available models is not considered. A sensible strategy is needed for model development, validation, and updating, such that prediction models can better support medical practice.Clinical Prediction Models presents a practical checklist with seven steps that need to be considered for development of a valid prediction model. These include preliminary considerations such as dealing with missing values; coding of predictors; selection of main effects and interactions for a multivariable model; estimation of model parameters with shrinkage methods and incorporation of external data; evaluation of performance and clinical usefulness; internal validation; and presentation format. The steps are illustrated with many small case studies and R computer code, with data sets made available in the public domain [http://www.clinicalpredictionmodels.org/]. The book further focuses on generalizability of prediction models, including patterns of invalidity that may be encountered in new settings, approaches to modifying and extending a model, and comparisons of centers after case-mix adjustment by a prediction model. The text is primarily intended for epidemiologists and applied biostatisticians. It can be used as a textbook for a graduate course on predictive modeling in diagnosis and prognosis. It is beneficial if readers are familiar with common statistical models in medicine: linear regression, logistic regression, and Cox regression. The book is practical in nature. But it also provides a philosophical perspective on data analysis in medicine that goes beyond predictive modeling. In this era of evidence-based medicine, randomized clinical trials are the basis for assessment of treatment efficacy. Prediction models are key to individualizing diagnostic and treatment decision-making.

Applied SOA: Service-Oriented Architecture and Design Strategies Review

Applied SOA: Service-Oriented Architecture and Design Strategies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I found this book valuable for providing a solid approach to designing service oriented architectures. It is important for people to understand that this book does not focus on implementing web services - there are plenty of other books that do that. This book focuses on the hard parts - how to design an architecture around the concept of services.
This book is also not a "cookbook" - it does not offer easy answers to these tough problems. Instead it walks you through the thought process so you can learn how to come up with the right answers yourself.
I am actively using this book to help my customers get started with SOA and to help them avoid common design pitfalls. My favorite chapter is Chapter 9: Using Services to Build Enterprise Solutions. The distinction between today's monolothic applications and tomorrow's composite applications requires a paradigm shift that the authors express well.
Finally, I especially liked the practical approach, practical steps and practical advice continually peppered throughout the entire book.

Heartbreaker Review

More ghetto lust than `Flavor of Love's' New York, more hardcore than Tiger Woods on Viagra, and more street than a cardboard box in Bed-Stuy. This is a very hot piece of work from three different authors, only one of whom I have read. I plan to remedy that right after this review. Each one of these stories has a solid mix of street, sex, grime, and grit. I would even go so far as to call these "street espressos". They may be short but they punch you like a drunk Mike Tyson.
My favorite was `Put `Em in Their Place' because 1. It's freaking good! And 2. Because Erick throws TWO huge, HUGE twists in here that leave you with your mouth hanging open like that kid from `Home Alone'. Cha is a chick you don't wanna "f" with because if you do... heaven help you because hell will be too scared! `Slippin' was a gutter obscene, gritty read as well. Reading about Sabrina makes me wish they would hurry up and clone a human because I would like to get a little of what she got. Heck, who am I kidding...? I'd sell my firstborn for bus fare and then ride that bus through Baghdad wearing a "What Would Jesus Do" t-shirt just to get a taste a' that!
"Kandy Girlz' was good but the strength really comes from the first two stories. It isn't a bad story, but if these three stories were in the Olympics "Kandy Girlz' would get the bronze. Not because it did not try or because it sucked, but rather because the other two were THAT good! All in all this was a very good book and I was introduced to two authors that I will keep an eye out for in the future.

Model Building in Mathematical Programming, 4th Edition Review

Model Building in Mathematical Programming, 4th Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If there is anything that I would hold against my favorite Operations Research books - it would be the lack of emphasis on model and structure. Williams' book fills in that gap and is an essential companion to every Math Prog book. It is not a cookbook where one can look up a particular problem and the possible ways to model it. Instead, it takes a systematic and very sensible approach to modeling.
The three chapters on Integer Programming Models are amazingly easy to understand and were a real help during a graduate course in the subject. The huge number of practical examples in Parts 2, 3 and 4 of the book is the real value of the book. I would be hard-pressed for space to describe the range of problems that are modeled in Part 2... Part 3 covers a good deal of discussion on these formulations and Part 4 follows it up with solutions. Though solutions are not discussed in detail, they are a great help for someone who has worked hard through the problems and needs a verification of the solutions.
Another useful section in the book is a chapter on the interpretation of Linear Programming solutions. For a person without a Math Prog background (say, a manager), this kind of material is very useful. In fact, it once served as a good refresher for me in a hurry... and an excellent one at that.
The only sore point is a very limited discussion on nonlinear models.

In particular sections and new problems have been added covering Revenue Management. Hydro Electric Generation, Date Envelopment (efficiency) Analysis, Milk Distribution and Collection and Constraint Programming. The book discusses the general principles of model building in mathematical programming and shows how they can be applied by using simplified but practical problems from widely different contexts. Suggested formulations and solutions are given in the latter part of the book together with computational experience to give the reader a feel for the computation difficulty of solving that particular type of model. Aimed at undergraduates, postgraduates, research students and managers, this book illustrates the scope and limitations of mathematical programming, and shows how it can be applied to real situations. By emphasizing the importance of the building and interpretation of models rather than the solution process, the author attempts to fill a gap left by the many works which concentrate on the algorithmic side of the subject.

C4D 9.5: Real-World 3D Animation Production (Charles River Media Graphics) Review

I was excited to get this title. For my needs, this book concentrated too much on use with thirdparty software and not enough on the depth of C4d itself and it's own modules. Perhaps that is what was intended. I don't regret adding it to my reference shelf for the odd consultation (books like this are almost always worth even a few great nuggets of knowlege) but it did not live up to my expectations of a definitive C4d reference. That may have had more to do with my expectations then the book itself.

Cinema 4D 9.5: Real-World 3D Animation Production teaches how to produce commercial-quality 3D animation using Maxon's, powerful and affordable, Cinema 4D. Written for 3D animation professionals, hobbyists, and students, this practical, hands-on book uses real-world projects to teach the entire production process. Beginning with a review of how to model photorealistic objects, the book progresses through creating custom materials, cloth simulation, and character animation, to video game and simulation techniques. The book takes a software-integrated approach to 3D animation production with a focus on Cinema 4D and how to use it in concert with several other applications. This Cinema 4D-centric approach shows how real-world 3D animation production challenges can be met, not only with a great tool, but with a great tool box.Throughout the book, you'll learn a highly efficient workflow for creating 3D character animation with C4D. You'll learn various ways of producing motion graphics by integrating Adobe? Photoshop, and After Effects?, with C4D. You?ll explore projects that use BodyPaint to extend your ability to create fantasy and control the realism of how image maps relate to their objects. And you'll use Right Hemisphere Deep Creator 2 and Code Gardener's XPort 1.3 to explore methods for animating video games and simulations. Some experience with 3D animation is assumed, but all levels of users will be challenged to expand their skills.
