This is apparently the first thorough modeling treatment of Ultrasonic Flowmeters. It uses a sophisticated coupled finite element boundary integral method. The book is clearly written is in good format and has much illustrative detail. The book also has over a 100 references which makes it valuable to get good access to previous work. The book should be handy for the latest designs of flowmeters with the use of ultrasound.

Today's most popular technology of ultrasonic flow measurement is based on the transit time principle. In this work, a numerical simulation technique applicable to the analysis and optimization of transit time flowmeters is presented. -- A flowmeter represents a large simulation problem which also requires computation of acoustic fields in moving media. For this purpose, a novel boundary integral method, the Helmholtz integral-ray tracing method (HIRM), is derived and validated. For simulation of practical acoustic devices, a hybrid simulation scheme consisting of the finite element method (FEM) and HIRM is proposed. It is demonstrated that the FEM-HIRM scheme enables an accurate and efficient simulation of a complete transit time flowmeter. -- In an industrial environment, the new simulation technique can be applied to accelerate the traditional experimental-based design of ultrasonic flowmeters.

I am no climate expert. This book changed my life in more ways than one. 1. I no longer drive a car. I sold it, craigslist for $500 dollars US. 2. I divorced my Husband. 3. I decided to live a life of limited means. No electricity, No manufactured products from overseas. I make my own toothpaste, how about that. This book, although not written to be romantic made me fall in love with this planet all over again. Just like we did in our first biology class.
I could write more but I feel this book captures the essence of the climate change problems. It's also a bargain buy!

Global climate change poses new risks to the worldeconomy. The unique dependence of the farm economyto the agroclimate makes it especially vulnerable toshifts in global weather patterns caused by globalwarming. Climate models have predicted increase inglobal mean temperatures along with shifts invariability and severity of weather events.Agriculture?s ability to combat climate changerelies on farm adaptation to the new riskenvironment created by climate change. Traditionaleconomic analyses on the topic have not paidadequate attention to critical elements such asproducer adaptation and adequately representing environmental and market risk. In this book, Dr. Kanakasabai integrates advanced crop simulation with economic decision modeling under uncertainty to explore farm adaptation under global climate change. He demonstrates through use of three increasinglyrealistic scenarios, the magnitude of climate shifts, potential for farm adaptation and the resulting impacts on farm revenues. The decision analysis employs advanced mathematical programming approaches which should be especially useful forrisk analysts, agricultural experts and policymakers.

Challenging exercises and workshops will reinforce the material and enable you to apply these techniques in your current projects.
By the end of the course, you will know how to…
Read a data model of any size and complexity
Validate any data model with the Data Model ScorecardÂ
Build relational and dimensional subject area, logical, and physical data models
Use abstraction
Gather requirements
Leverage a series of templates for capturing requirements
Write clear, complete, and correct definitions
Explain the critical factors that must be in place for a successful enterprise data model
Topics
Part 1: Modeling Basics. We will explain data modeling concepts and terminology. We will also explore each component on a data model and practice reading business rules.
Part 2: Overview to the Data Model ScorecardÂ. The Scorecard is a set of ten categories for validating a data model. We will explore best practices from the perspectives of both the modeler and reviewer, and you will be provided with a template to use on your current projects.
Part 3: Understanding subject area, logical, and physical data models. The subject area model captures a business need within a well-defined scope; the logical data model captures an application-independent business solution; and the physical data model captures the technical solution by focusing on factors such as performance and security. Each of these models will be explained in detail in this section.
Part 4: Ensuring the model captures the requirements. We will focus on techniques such as the use of spreadsheets and business assertions to ensure the data model meets the business requirements.
Part 5: Validating model scope. We will focus on techniques for validating that the scope of the requirements matches the scope of the model. If the scope of the model is greater than the requirements, we have a situation known as scope creep. If the model scope is less than the requirements, we will be leaving information out of the resulting application.
Part 6: Following acceptable modeling principles. We will focus on techniques for building sound designs.
Part 7: Determining the optimal use of generic concepts. We will focus on techniques for capturing the ideal use of generic concepts such as
Party and Event.
Part 8: Applying consistent naming standards. We will focus on techniques for applying correct and consistent naming standards.

Models have become the superstars of the '90s - and male supermodels are the newest phenomenon in this glamorous, cosmopolitan world. Often stealing the limelight from their female counterparts, they are attracting increasing media attention and an almost cult following to rival even the most famous film stars and rock idols. Boss Models, the first agency for the male model, has singlehandedly launched the careers of some of the most successful male models of today - men whose gorgeous bodies and sculpted features can be admired in top fashion magazines, on billboards in the street, on television, and on the catwalks in London, Paris, Milan and New York. This text provides an insight into life behind the scenes of Boss Models. Photographs of over 100 men are accompanied by personal interviews with such figures as Joel West, to be seen in New York's Times Square on the Calvin Klein billboard, Mark Fisher, the new Ralph Lauren POLO model, Marcus Schenkenberg, the very first Boss model to be signed up, and many others whose faces may well be more familiar than their names.

A Guide to Empirical Orthogonal Functions for Climate Data Analysis Review

A Guide to Empirical Orthogonal Functions for Climate Data Analysis
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I asked my local library to purchase this book before I invested personally in it. Overall, it is very good. It begins with very limited sections on linear algebra & statistics and progresses to a very general overview of empirical orthogonal function analysis. This includes some discussion of principal components, eigenvalues, singular value decomposition, and multiple regression analysis. I liked this book because it started with the basics. However, I'm pretty confident that someone with a greater statistics & linear algebra background would find that the book spends too much time on 'pre-EOF' topics and does not go into enough detail about EOF analysis. Even I felt that way once I finished. The Matlab code the book provides as well as the explanations of different rotations used in EOF analysis are excellent additions which add a lot of value to the book. This is a small book however, and it is overpriced, in my opinion.

Climatology and meteorology have basically been a descriptive science until it became possible to use numerical models, but it is crucial to the success of the strategy that the model must be a good representation of the real climate system of the Earth. Models are required to reproduce not only the mean properties of climate, but also its variability and the strong spatial relations between climate variability in geographically diverse regions. Quantitative techniques were developed to explore the climate variability and its relations between different geographical locations. Methods were borrowed from descriptive statistics, where they were developed to analyze variance of related observations-variable pairs, or to identify unknown relations between variables.

A Guide to Empirical Orthogonal Functions for Climate Data Analysis uses a different approach, trying to introduce the reader to a practical application of the methods, including data sets from climate simulations and MATLAB codes for the algorithms. All pictures and examples used in the book may be reproduced by using the data sets and the routines available in the book .

Though the main thrust of the book is for climatological examples, the treatment is sufficiently general that the discussion is also useful for students and practitioners in other fields.

Enterprise JavaBeans, Fourth Edition Review

Enterprise JavaBeans, Fourth Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Every chapter was excellent.
The book starts with a chapter that explains distributed objects, components, server-side components, and transaction monitors in a way that makes total sense and is fun to read.
The next couple of chapters give you an in-depth look at the EJB architecture removing all the mystery from the technology -- these chapters are pure gold.
Chapters 3 through 7 show how to develop stateless, stateful, CMP and BMP entity beans. These chapters explain how to write beans and how to use them. The examples are very excellent.
Chapter 8 is a very long but necessary chapter on transactions and how they work in EJB. I'm glad they saved this for after Chapters 3 -7 because it's complicated.
Chapter 9 is a priceless Design Strategies chapter that gives you more punch in the first 10 pages then most books give in 100. Even experienced EJB developers will learn new tricks from this chapter.
Chapter 10 is on XML deployment descriptors. This is an excellent reference and the way its organized makes it much simpler to understand.
Chapter 11 covers J2EE. It's short but excellent. The author tells you exactly how EJB fits into J2EE, which is all I wanted to know.
Appendix A - D are an invaluable reference for developers. They include a complete class reference, UML state diagrams and charts, vendor listing and finally a summary of the changes from EJB 1.0 to EJB 1.1.
This is the best EJB book available and will continue to be the best for a long time. Its too solid and too well organized not to be.

The new 2.1 version of the Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) spec extends its support for web services and the Java Web Services APIs, expands its asynchronous messaging support, adds XML Schema for deployment descriptors, and introduces a new Timer service, which allows for scheduling EJB jobs. The essential--and award winning--book on EJBs, Enterprise JavaBeans, has been completely revised and updated in this new fourth edition, to provide the real-world, nitty-gritty detail developers need to master EJB 2.1.

Previous editions of this clear and engaging introduction to EJBs were voted the "Best Java Book" by the editors and readers of Java Developer's Journal, the "Best Java Book for Experts," by JavaPro editors, and one of theTop Computer Booksby Amazon.com. The fourth edition lives up to--and surpasses--the excellent reputation earned by its predecessors.

This authoritative and thorough guide includes everything that made previous editions the singlemust-havebook for EJB developers: the authors solid grasp on the complexities of EJBs coupled with his succinct, easy-to-follow style; hundreds of clear, practical examples; adept coverage the key concepts EJBs ; and diagrams to illustrate the concepts presented. It also includes everything you need to get up to speed quickly on the changes wrought by EJB version 2.1, an architecture overview, information on resource management and primary services, design strategies, and XML deployment descriptors.

In this edition, we're adding an EJB workbook for JBoss 4.0.The workbook shows how to deploy all of the examples on the JBoss 4.0 application server. It addresses an important problem with EJB: deploying the software on a server can be extremely difficult.JBoss is an open source project that has become the most widely used J2EE application server.

Good technical authors may lay the facts before you, but great ones offer the distilled essence of their own experience and insight. Richard Monson-Haefel has provided just what Java developers need to know to harness the complexity of EJBs. What makes Monson-Haefel a master of technical authoring can be seen in his well-thought-out and logical progression of ideas, and in his examples practical, precise, usable examples, large enough to test key concepts but still small enough to be comprehensible taken apart and explained in the detail you need to deploy those principles in other situations.

If you work with EJBs--or want to--this book will earn a favored spot on your bookshelf.

Face Processing: Advanced Modeling and Methods Review

Face Processing: Advanced Modeling and Methods
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Evolution gives us a profound and hardwired ability to recognise others of our own species. A fundamental trait vital to any species which has eyes. This also has had the effect of making effective face recognition a very hard task for computers. Which has not deterred many researchers from tackling the problem.
This book is a timely summary of our current understanding. Each chapter has a bulky list of references that will aid researchers. Along with many photos and diagrams that illustrate the various algorithms. The editors have also thoughtfully provided a central selection of colour plates for enhanced viewing. The illustrations in the rest of the text are in black and white.
The maths in various methods is impressive. As in convoluting for general materials. Or the key concept of an eigenface. So important is this that it is covered early, in the entirety of chapter 2. The term is a natural extension of eigenvalue and eigenvector, used in linear algebra and differential systems. Suffice it to say that you should already be fluent in the latter, otherwise much of this book will be meaningless.

Major strides have been made in face processing in the last ten years due to the fast growing need for security in various locations around the globe. A human eye can discern the details of a specific face with relative ease. It is this level of detail that researchers are striving to create with ever evolving computer technologies that will become our perfect mechanical eyes. The difficulty that confronts researchers stems from turning a 3D object into a 2D image. That subject is covered in depth from several different perspectives in this volume. This book begins with a comprehensive introductory chapter for those who are new to the field. A compendium of articles follows that is divided into three sections. The first covers basic aspects of face processing from human to computer. The second deals with face modeling from computational and physiological points of view. The third tackles the advanced methods, which include illumination, pose, expression, and more. Editors Zhao and Chellappa have compiled a concise and necessary text for industrial research scientists, students, and professionals working in the area of image and signal processing. *Contributions from over 35 leading experts in face detection, recognition and image processing*Over 150 informative images with 16 images in FULL COLOR illustrate and offer insight into the most up-to-date advanced face processing methods and techniques*Extensive detail makes this a need-to-own book for all involved with image and signal processing

Designing Virtual Reality Systems: The Structured Approach Review

Designing Virtual Reality Systems: The Structured Approach
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This text does not pertain to any new research in the field of virtual reality or virtual environments. Instead, it is meant to be a modern introduction (post VRML) to students new to VR on what building blocks are required to produce a virtual reality system. I review the book in the context of its table of contents:
Chapter 1 "Introduction: Virtual Reality in a Nutshell" is just a broad overview of the field and of this book. It discusses the goals and applications of VR, and also discusses what it considers to be the two pillars of VR: presence and 3D multimodal interaction.
Chapter 2 "Requirements Engineering and Storyboarding" discusses VR from the standpoint of a concrete example: a ship simulator design.
Chapter 3 "Object and Scene Modeling" discusses object modeling, scene construction, object placement, multiple frames of reference, re-expressing coordinate systems, and both functional and behavioral modeling. All of this is done from the standpoint of the ship simulator design that was introduced in chapter two. There is quite a bit about graphics concepts in this chapter.
Chapter 4 "Putting it All Together" pulls together the concepts from chapters 2 and 3 into a system design philosophy, again from the standpoint of the concrete example of the ship simulator design.
Chapter 5 "Performance Estimation and System Tuning" is somewhat mislabeled in my opinion. This chapter discusses some advanced graphics concepts such as tuning with level-of-detail models, presence and special effects, and use of images and texturing.
Chapter 6 "Output Display" is about human optical perception as well as available display hardware. First the human visual system is briefly discussed along with human depth perception and stereoscopy. Next visual display systems are discussed along with haptics - the science of applying touch sensation and control to interaction with computer applications.
Chapter 7 "Sensors and Input Processing" discusses trackers, event generators, and sensor errors and calibration.
Chapter 8 "3D Multimodal Interaction Design" is about fusing symbolic and statistical information from a set of 3D gesture, spoken language, and referential agents. In particular, a structured approach is presented, along with ideas on interfacing, and finally some case studies. Among the case studies are the previously mentioned ship simulator along with immersive authoring, tabletop computing, menu selection and invocation, and whole-body interaction.
Next, there are two short chapters on simulation.
Chapter 9 discusses the basics of collision detection, starting with collision detection of line segments, then moving on to collision among polygonal models, building a bounding volume, and finally collision among bounding volumes.
Chapter 10 introduces physics based motion and collision response. Among the topics mentioned are center of gravity, moment of inertia, linear and rotational kinematics, laws of motion, dynamics, collision response, and deformation. There are quite a few equations shown in this chapter, and although this is just meant as an introduction the material is quite useful.
Chapter 11 "Virtual Characters" is the final chapter and touches on a rather advanced subject. The form of such a character, motion control, and inverse and forward kinematics of such a character are discussed.
Although this is a short book - roughly 230 pages total - it is very useful in that it does not wander through its topics in an academic way, but takes a systems engineering and mathematical approach to building virtual worlds. The use of the ship simulator is very enlightening and binds the book together into a very cohesive and useful volume. The block diagrams and pseudocode are also very helpful. You are going to need other books to build a complete virtual world, but this is an outstanding modern outline of everything that you need to consider. I highly recommend this book as an introductory text to any student wishing to learn the practical issues behind building a virtual reality system.
