Applied Flow and Solute Transport Modeling in Aquifers: Fundamental Principles and Analytical and Numerical Methods Review

Applied Flow and Solute Transport Modeling in Aquifers: Fundamental Principles and Analytical and Numerical Methods
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Applied Flow and Solute Transport Modeling in Aquifers" by Dr. Batu is a user-friendly compendium unraveling the complexities of analytical and numerical ground water modeling. The power of this book is contained in two attributes: (1) applied examples illustrating nearly each mathematical approach and (2) the optional derivational details for those who thrive on the theoretical backgrounds of those derivations.
Dr. Batu balances theory with application in this book. Although his recent publication, Aquifer Hydraulics: A Comprehensive Guide to Hydrogeologic Data Analysis (Wiley & Sons, 1998) is considered by many to be the "bible" of aquifer hydraulics, the derivations were detailed to the point of exhaustion. This 2005 edition makes the derivations not only understandable but the cases study examples inspire interest to learn them.
Another particular strength of this book is Dr. Batu's ability to summarize and condense the subject matter without the need for secondary references. The Table of Contents is seventeen pages long illustrating that the book contains nearly all - if not all - hydraulic applications to ground water flow and solute transport modeling. However the book not unmanageable in size and detail, in fact it is user-friendly and well organized coupled with motivating the reader to LEARN how to apply the theorical background, not just follow the derivation for theory's sake. Congratulations Dr. Batu on successfully developing the real aquifer hydraulics bible in this edition.

Over recent years, important contributions on the topic of solving various aquifer problems have been presented in numerous papers and reports. The scattered and wide-ranging nature of this information has made finding solutions and best practices difficult. Comprehensive and self-contained, Applied Flow and Solute Transport Modeling in Aquifers compiles the scattered literature on the topic into a single-source reference of the most up-to-date information in the field. Based on Dr. Batu's 20 years of practical experience tackling aquifer problems in a myriad of settings, the book addresses essentially all currently applied aquifer flow and contaminant transport solutions, combines theory with practical applications, covers both analytical and numerical solutions, and includes solutions to real world contaminant transport modeling scenarios. Batu approaches the subject from the practicing consultant's point of view and elucidates the difficulties real world professionals have faced in solving aquifer flow and contamination problems. The author simplifies the necessary theoretical background as much as possible and provides all derivational details of the theoretical background as worked examples. He uses this method to explore how the derivations were generated for those who need to know while allowing others to easily skip them and still benefit and learn from the practical applications of the mathematical approaches. Containing 51 tables and 323 figures, the book covers both the breadth and the depth of currently applied aquifer flow and contaminant transport modeling solutions.

Parenting as a Help to Life: Modeling the Principle of Unconditional Respect and Learning by Love Review

Parenting as a Help to Life: Modeling the Principle of Unconditional Respect and Learning by Love
Average Reviews:

This is a wonderful book. Not only can I attest to that fact because I have read it and thoroughly absorbed its wisdom, but I have seen the principles in action first hand -- both my 7 year old daughter and 5 year old son attend the Montessori school owned and directed by the author. Nelun has enriched the lives of countless children and their parents through her true adherence to both the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori and the loving compassionate kindness she gained from her parents and the Asian culture in which she was raised.
The principles espoused in Nelun's book are set forth in graceful language and are simple enough for every parent to try...by both those with experience in a Montessori system and those without.
In this age where nearly every child has a Nintendo DS, X-box and Wii by the time they are in gradeschool, Nelun's suggestions for spending quality time with children and teaching them through lived experience and love are invaluable and beautiful in their simplicity. Parenting is a difficult job but one that is so important that we should all step back and analyze the methods by which we do parent and ask ourselves..."Are we truly providing our children with a foundation that is a help to life?" And if not, how do we seek to remedy that? The pointers and information contained in this book will help all parents build that foundation upon patience, peace, compassion and love. If you perhaps were a result of less than ideal parenting (and weren't we all to some extent?) and you are looking for a different path upon which to lead your children, read this book!

Parenting as 'A Help to Life' is an exposition of one world citizen's well lived educational wisdom. It is a plea and a life-prescription for parents and children, hand in hand. It is about the peaceful preservation of our matrix of existence, by infusing each breath of being with unconditional love through thought, word and deed. It is about 'respect' for the individual made of the collective and vice versa, centered upon the penetrating truth that life is selfless but not self-centered, in harmony with reality as a whole. Essentially, it is about the application of the PIVOTAL TRUTH called 'compassion or looking through the eyes of another' in all innumerable circumstances through the whole of life - in light of all beings sentient and other. This ought to be the basis upon which the threefold human construction called body-mind-spirit must rest. Success in the wake of learning and overall well-being will then be the automatic consequence that transcends all other worldly truths. This is an exellent book that provides a comprehensive overview over the history of soil-landscape modeling and pedometrics. The first part is focused on a review of soil-landscape analysis from different perspectives including soil survey and classifications, historical and geomorphological mapping techniques, emerging geographic information technologies (GPS, GIS, remote and soil sensors) and topographic mapping. The second part of the book is focused on multiple pedometrical methods (simple and complex multivariate quantitative models) to describe the spatial distribution of soil properties and their relationships to environmental factors (geology, vegetation, land use, terrain properties, climate) [e.g. ordinary kriging, cokriging, 3D kriging, fuzzy based modeling, spatial stochastic simulations, spatial lattice modeling, wavelets, space-time geostatistics]. Different methods are introduced and applications from diverse landscapes presented. The book is unique because it goes beyond the typical qualitative descriptions of soils and taxonomy. Here, a complete package provides the novice and advanced pedometrician with a rich resource to teach and learn about quantitative soil-landscape modeling. The editor argues that soil-landscape analysis is a holistic endeavor in which soils are one component of an environmental system and are related to multiple environmental factors. Space and time considerations are given special attention. Chapters are written by the cream de la cream in the field of pedometrics. Congratulations to all authors and the editor of this book that are experts in their field.

Digital Signal Integrity: Modeling and Simulation with Interconnects and Packages
Average Reviews:

This book is not Howard Johnson's "Black Magic..". It is not one of the many books discussing practical rules of thumb to solve EMI and signal integrity issues. It covers the basics but the emphasis is to understand the modeling and simulation of signal integrity issues. It is theoretical but not in a very complicated mathematical way. You don't need to know Maxwell's equations, but you need to be able to follow some simple matrix equations. The book can be a little hard to read at some points but some of the sections are a joy. For example, the simple models showing the skin effect and current crowding are the best I have seen in any book on this subject. Without using any advanced math, but simply breaking down the wires into a few sections and using nothing more than inductance, mutual inductance, and resistance, the author shows how skin effect and current crowding come about. The section on capacitance matrices, definition of partial inductance and the different definitions of inductance: Field-based, Energy-based, and thin wire, clear up many questions I had about these concepts. When I first started using this book for a class I took, I had bought Daly's book as I thought it was easier to read and covered more practical subjects. I have completely changed my first impression. Daly's book although containing many practical subjects is badly written, while this book which doesn't have the friendliest fonts and presentation is actually a very good book. I have to thank the instructor for choosing this book. I would have never bought it on my own.

Continuum Mechanics using Mathematica®: Fundamentals, Applications and Scientific Computing (Modeling and Simulation in Science, Engineering and Technology) Review

Continuum Mechanics using Mathematica®: Fundamentals, Applications and Scientific Computing (Modeling and Simulation in Science, Engineering and Technology)
Average Reviews:

The mathematics discussed here is quite involved. Including tensor analysis, stress-strain relations and the non-linear Navier Stokes equation. Much of the work involves numerical analysis, as there are no analytic solutions to many problems.
You can treat the book as a standard, advanced text on the subject. But the added filip here is how it shows Mathematica can be used. Most general purpose texts on Mathematica involve simpler maths; high school or undergraduate level. Yet the program is quite powerful.
The book seems aimed at those scientists and engineers who are not primarily programmers. The idea is to let Mathematica offload much of the programming burden. The tradeoff might be that a loss of efficiency vis a vis custom code. But that might be acceptable to you.

Comet and Asteroid Impact Hazards on a Populated Earth: Computer Modeling Review

Comet and Asteroid Impact Hazards on a Populated Earth: Computer Modeling
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book by Planetary Scientist John Lewis includes a diskette with a Monte Carlo program to run simulations of Earth impacts over time. The book is basically a handbook for the software with a wide range of physical information about NEOs, impacts and effects on the human population. An excellent resource covering physics, chemistry and environment. I can recommend it to anyone studying the possible influence of impacts on civilisation. Over thousands of years airburst events like Tunguska turn out to be important sources of fatalities and yet they leave little or no physical evidence so information about the danger is unlikely to be reliably passed from generation to generation.
Note that the program requires GW-BASIC to run To run the program in a higher version of BASIC such as Quick Basic you will need to convert it from binary to ASCII format from within GW-BASIC. To do this load the program in GW-BASIC (F3 path/filename.BAS) then save it with the ASCII option set (F4 path/new_filename.BAS , A ). This is all subject to the copyright conditions of course.

Comet and Asteroid Impact Hazards explores the anticipated consequences of comet and asteroid impact. It presents the first computer simulations of the hazards of comet and asteroid bombardment of a populated Earth. Previous estimates of fatality and damage rates on the 100 to 10,000 year time scale are shown to be too low because they neglect rare, highly lethal outriders of the populations of bombarding objects, those with exceptional strength, unusually low entry velocity, and near-horizontal entry angles. This is the first realistic assessment of both the mean casualty rate and the expected statistical fluctuations in that rate. A breakdown of fatality and damage rates by impactor energy and compositional class suggests lessons for both asteroid search strategies and interdiction techniques. This book is written so that anyone with college level experience in the physical sciences can understand it. It includes a disk that allows the reader to simulate impact catastrophes. It serves as a useful resource in various physical sciences courses such as astronomy, planetary science, and environmental science. * Quantatively rigorous treatment of the state of impact hazard prediction, including stuctural blast damage, firestorm ignition, tsunami generation* Realistic treatment of the impact on population, composition, and orbits* Attention to economic and public policy issues of warning, interdiction, and asteroid and comet search strategies* Comparison of simulation results to historical records* Detailed and realistic Monte Carlo simulation software included

Ordinal Data Modeling (Statistics for Social and Behavioral Sciences)
Average Reviews:

This book provides both the Bayesian and classical approaches to ordinal data analysis but is unique in emphasizing the Bayesian approach and the latest advances. The authors are academic statisticians and the text is designed for a graduate level course for statistics or social science majors. It includes some very well written introductory material on these two forms fo statistical inference.
The mathematical level is intermediate but is written in a clear way to be accessible to social science students. This is also a good reference book for statisticians especially those involved in educational testing.
Markov chain Monte Carlo methods are provided along with some programmed algorithms for doing Gibbs sampling. A website is available to help the reader get access to datasets and software to implement the procedures.
Although the offer of software is nice, the authors neglect to mention the BUGS software that has been developed in the UK to handle MCMC problems. BUGS or the new window based WinBUGS is easily accessible to the reader and provides a lot of additional modeling aids including diagnostics.
The book covers a lot of interesting and applications oriented topics including logistic regression, ordinal regression, item response models, graded response models and the analysis of ROC curves. Concepts are illustrated and techniques demonstrated through real problems.

Environmental Modeling: A Practical Introduction Review

Environmental Modeling: A Practical Introduction
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Environmental Modeling: A Practical Introduction by Mike Barnsley (CRC) Increasingly used to represent climatic, biogeochemical, and ecological systems, computer modeling has become an important tool that should be in every environmental professional's toolbox. Environmental Modeling: A Practical Introduction is just what it purports to be, a practical introduction to the various methods, techniques, and skills required for computerized environmental modeling. Exploring the broad arena of environmental modeling, the book demonstrates how to represent an environmental problem in conceptual terms, formalize the conceptual model using mathematical expressions, convert the mathematical model into a program that can be run on a desktop or laptop computer, and examine the results produced by the computational model.
Equally important, the book imparts skills that allow you to develop, implement, and experiment with a range of computerized environmental models. The emphasis is on active engagement in the modeling process rather than on passive learning about a suite of well-established models. The author takes a practical approach throughout, one that does not get bogged down in the details of the underlying mathematics and that encourages learning through "hands on" experimentation. He provides a set of-software tools and data sets that you can use to work through the various examples and exercises presented in each chapter, as well as presentational material and handouts for course tutors. Comprehensive and up-to-date, the book discusses how computational models can be used to represent environmental systems and illustrates how such models improve understanding of the ways in which environmental systems function.
The initial motivation to write this book stemmed from the perception of a growing divide between the increasingly sophisticated computer-based models that are being developed to represent various aspects of Earth's environmental systems (including those pertaining to its climate, ecosystems, biogeochemical cycles and hydrological processes) and the ability of many undergraduate students, and even some graduate students, of the environmental sciences to engage constructively with these models. The aim of this book, therefore, is to provide a practical introduction to the various methods, techniques and skills involved in computerized environmental modeling, including (i) representing an environmental problem in conceptual terms (i.e., devel¬oping a conceptual model), (ii) formalizing the conceptual model using mathemati¬cal expressions (i.e., formulating a mathematical model), (iii) converting the math¬ematical model into a program that can be run on a desktop or a laptop computer (i.e., implementing a computational model) and (iv) examining the results produced by the computational model (i.e., visualizing the output from a model and checking the model's validity in comparison with observations of the target system).

Modeling and Simulation: Theory and Practice A Memorial Volume for Professor Walter J. Karplus

I haven't, as yet, read this book of Dr. Karplus', but I was one of those fortunate enough to have been a student of his, and I have most of his other books, and many binders of notes from his classes.
Dr. Karplus was one of those minds that inspired awe and humility in his students. He had an incredible breadth and depth of knowledge in so many areas and subjects that it seemed he must have spent every second reading, thinking, and integrating to have created his mind. I was so struck by his achievements, and more, by him personally, that after the last class I took from him I wrote him a letter telling him how much I admired him, and how much of an inspiration he was to me. After he got it, he called me into his office and thanked me, telling me how touched he was.
I was very saddened when I heard of his death, and I'm very glad that his colleagues got together and created this volume. Thank you, gentlemen.
I urge anyone who is interested in the subject of computer modeling and simulation to read this book, or any of Karplus' books. You can't do any better in this area.

Effective Competency Modeling and Reporting (With CD-ROM) Review

Effective Competency Modeling and Reporting (With CD-ROM)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One of the most challenging tasks I undertake as an information technology (IT) consultant is developing organizational models that are designed to optimize IT service delivery to the business process areas that IT is chartered to support. Often I have found myself crossing boundaries between IT processes and the domain of expertise owned by HR. Ultimately HR is responsible for reviewing and approving my findings and recommendations, so this book is especially valuable in that it has enabled me to see the problems and challenges through the perspective of HR.
Among the unique perspectives that this book has provided me are: (1) there are vast differences between organizational and individual competencies. Both aspects need to be carefully examined before a viable solution that meets organizational and individual needs can be crafted. This is especially important for IT consultants because the workers remain in high demand and retention in the face of aggressive recruiting has to be factored in or your IT corporate knowledge and skills will migrate to competitors. (2) Determining whether the goal is quality or excellence. They are two different things and the definitions are hard to pin down. For example, is customer satisfaction a quality or excellence goal? In IT it can be both. (3) The fact that competency can be modeled and measured. Prior to reading this book I went on past experience and narrowly focused books such as IT Organization by Kern, Galup and Nemiro. While that book addressed IT organization from IT's perspective, it was missing the techniques and processes used by HR professionals. As such, the competency modeling and reporting (CMAR) process and associated techniques in Effective Competency Modeling & Reporting have enabled me to approach my analysis in a manner that is consistent with HR practices and produce findings and recommendations that an HR professional will understand.
Some of the other strong points about this book are: (1) it employs a coherent process that is augmented by software tools (Competency Coach® for Windows, whish is also provided on the CD ROM accompanying the book - the version that comes on the CD ROM has a limitation on the save function); (2) step-by-step procedures for performing competency modeling, (3) assessment procedures used to measure your results. In addition, the book includes a sample 72-item model that covers common competencies, a sample position standards spreadsheet, a sample skills-based assessment instrument and other files and artifacts that add considerable value to this book.
Bottom line: while this book is aimed at HR professionals, the information and approach provided is not limited to HR. As a reviewer who is not an HR professional I rate this book at five stars and give it my highest recommendation. I suspect HR professionals will do the same.

Anderson's work synthesizes the results of 30 years of cultural resource archaeological investigations conducted on the US Army's Ft. Polk installation. Located in an upland environment, Ft. Polk is off Louisiana's archaeological beaten path. However, the insights gathered from decades of work have been of immense help in understanding the history and prehistory of central and western Louisiana.

Fort Polk Military Reservation encompasses approximately 139,000 acres in western Louisiana 40 miles southwest of Alexandria. As a result of federal mandates for cultural resource investigation, more archaeological work has been undertaken there, beginning in the 1970s, than has occurred at any other comparably sized area in Louisiana or at most other localities in the southeastern United States. The extensive program of survey, excavation, testing, and large-scale data and artifact recovery, as well as historic and archival research, has yielded a massive amount of information. While superbly curated by the U.S. Army, the material has been difficult to examine and comprehend in its totality.

With this volume, Anderson and Smith collate and synthesize all the information into a comprehensive whole. Included are previous investigations, an overview of local environmental conditions, base military history and architecture, and the prehistoric and historic cultural sequence. An analysis of location, environmental, and assemblage data employing a sample of more than 2,800 sites and isolated finds was used to develop a predictive model that identifies areas where significant cultural resources are likely to occur. Developed in 1995, this model has already proven to be highly accurate and easy to use.

Archaeology, History, and Predictive Modeling will allow scholars to more easily examine the record of human activity over the past 13,000 or more years in this part of western Louisiana and adjacent portions of east Texas. It will be useful to southeastern archaeologists and anthropologists, both professional and amateur.

David G. Anderson is an archaeologist with the National Park Service's Southeast Archeological Center in Tallahassee, Florida, and coeditor of The Woodland Southeast. Steven D. Smith is with SCIAA in Columbia, South Carolina. J.W. Joseph and Mary Beth Reed are with New South Associates in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
