Geometric Transformations for 3D Modeling Review

Geometric Transformations for 3D Modeling
Average Reviews:

Pedagogically, Mortenson's presentation is easy for a reader to follow. Accompanied by generous numbers of diagrams. He gives understandable interpretations of how matrices are used to represent different types of transformations. The underlying geometrical rationale is clear.
En route, the reader is gently introduced to group theory. For finite groups. A way to bind geometry and symmetry. Interestingly, the notation he uses for the symmetries and groups is Schonflies. In 1982, this was already being phased out by crystallographers, in favour of International notation. But maybe mathematicians prefer the older style.
There is also a quick discussion of tensors. Giving rise to contra and covariant vectors. And the metric tensor is introduced as a key idea. All this is a jumping off point for physicists studying General Relativity, though it is not actually mentioned by name.

Written from a mathematical standpoint accessible to students, teachers, and professionals studying or practicing in engineering, mathematics, or physics, the new second edition is a comprehensive introduction to the theory and application of transformations. Presenting the more abstract foundation material in the first three chapters, Geometric Transformations in 3D Modeling reduces the clutter of theoretical derivation and development in the remainder of the text and introduces the operational and more application-oriented tools and concepts as the need arises. It assumes the reader has already taken analytic geometry and first-year calculus and has a working knowledge of basic matrix and vector algebra. This self-contained resource is sure to appeal to those working in 3D modeling, geometric modeling, computer graphics, animation, robotics, and kinematics. Distinctive Features- Explores and develops the subject in much greater breadth and depth than other books, offering readers a better understanding of transformation theory, the role of invariants, the uses of various notation systems, and the relations between transformations.- Describes how geometric objects may change position, orientation, or even shape when subjected to mathematical operations, while properties characterizing their geometric identity and integrity remain unchanged.- Presents eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and tensors in a way that makes it easier for readers to understand.- Contains revised and improved figures, with many in color to highlight important features.- Provides exercises throughout nearly all of the chapters whose answers are found at the end of the book.

Modeling Random Processes for Engineers and Managers Review

Modeling Random Processes for Engineers and Managers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Author James Solberg claims that his book has a non standard presentation for probability and random processes. He is absolutely right! For example, he devotes a whole chapter (Chapter 2) to modeling Markov chains, before doing any of the usual calculation methods (chapter 3).
In other books, a small amount of such material would appear as examples or exercises. But Solberg deems it worthy of a whole chapter, and he specifically states properties that would normally be overlooked. For example, he talks about converting count data into transition matrices, he talks about different possible ways of defining step size, he introduces lumpability to reduce the size of the state space.
The book is full of examples, chosen to illustrate practical uses of the material, or selected to add understanding. This book is student friendly. I lent my copy to a graduate student and after returning the book, he commented that the book greatly improved his understanding of stochastic processes. The book is at a lower level than many other books on the subject, but not much lower. The author's years of experience enable him to recognize where a student would normally have difficulties and the author takes steps to add explantion to enhance understanding. Chapter 8 gives a new path counting method to find limiting probabilities for Markov chains and continuous time Markov processes. Chapters 6 and 7 deal with queueing and queueing networks. The book is consistently well written. I think that this is a splendid book for a nonprobabilist to become introduced to the material. I have never met James Solberg, but the queue on the front cover includes a cheerful man who seems older than the others. I hope that man is Solberg. Even if not, the smile on the man's face comes through in the writing of the book.

By reducing mathematical detail and focusing on real-world applications, this book provides engineers with an easy-to-understand overview of stochastic modeling. An entire chapter is included on how to set up the problem, and then another complete chapter presents examples of applications before doing any math. A previously unpublished computational method for solving equations related to Markov processes is added. The book shows how to add costs or revenues to the basic probability structures without much additional effort. In addition, numerous examples are included that show how the theory can be used. Engineers will also find explanations on how to formulate word problems into the models that the math worked on.

Organization Modeling: Innovative Architectures for the 21st Century Review

Organization Modeling: Innovative Architectures for the 21st Century
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Information modeling, organization theory and design, knowledge management, strategic planning, and process design are all subjects of dozens of published books. Organization Modeling (OM) introduces an innovative framework to utilize these and other relative techniques. The authors have created a novel approach, architecture, and framework that any organization wishing to compete in the 21st century should not be without. Based in existing organization theory, the authors have extended well beyond the traditional theorists. Instead, OM provides a roadmap for business professionals. They have also clearly drawn the line dividing information technology and business modeling. If you are an information technology person expecting another technique for object oriented programming, this book is not for you. If, though, you are an information technology person who desires to move beyond the IT world, this book will provide the tools and framework to move in that direction. If you are an organizational theorist looking for another school of pure organizational theory, you will find much more than that here. Instead, you will find a synthesis of organization theory and other disciplines in a pragmatic yet holistic framework. A word of caution, this book is not some form of "pop-theory" that can be read in a day or two. I was familiar with many of the subjects in the book and still found the best method for reading was absorption and reflection. I found myself examining how each section of the book could be applied at my current business situation. The book uses an extended information modeling technique introduced by Kilov. Once again, I found myself creating Kilovish models of my current situation to provide greater insight into the material. The book starts by setting the foundation of OM. This foundation introduces key concepts such as the organization molecule, and emergent organizational patterns. Once the foundation is set, the authors introduce applications to key concepts such as information, data, knowledge, culture, and learning. One soon comes to realize the true power of an architecture/framework at this level of abstraction. This book is a must have for any person interested understanding and moving their organization into the 21st century, or students of management related studies.

Containing many results that are new or exist only in recent research articles, Interest Rate Modeling: Theory and Practice portrays the theory of interest rate modeling as a three-dimensional object of finance, mathematics, and computation. It introduces all models with financial-economical justifications, develops options along the martingale approach, and handles option evaluations with precise numerical methods. The text begins with the mathematical foundations, including Ito's calculus and the martingale representation theorem. It then introduces bonds and bond yields, followed by the Heath-Jarrow-Morton (HJM) model, which is the framework for no-arbitrage pricing models. The next chapter focuses on when the HJM model implies a Markovian short-rate model and discusses the construction and calibration of short-rate lattice models. In the chapter on the LIBOR market model, the author presents the simplest yet most robust formula for swaption pricing in the literature. He goes on to address model calibration, an important aspect of model applications in the markets; industrial issues; and the class of affine term structure models for interest rates.Taking a top-down approach, Interest Rate Modeling provides readers with a clear picture of this important subject by not overwhelming them with too many specific models. The text captures the interdisciplinary nature of the field and shows readers what it takes to be a competent quant in today's market. This book can be adopted for instructional use. For this purpose, a solutions manual is available for qualifying instructors.

Integrated Practice in Architecture: Mastering Design-Build, Fast-Track, and Building Information Modeling Review

Integrated Practice in Architecture: Mastering Design-Build, Fast-Track, and Building Information Modeling
Average Reviews:

The term "integrated practice" was quickly dispatched in 2007 when the California Council of the AIA presented "Integrated Project Delivery - A Working Definition" at the AIA National Convention - and for good reason. Integrated practice is an internal affair for each of the Owner, Architect and Contractor. Integrated Project Delivery brings all parties involved in the development of a project into the discussion. In addition, for the time being - and for some time into the future - any practice is going to involve both traditional and integrated project delivery. Finally, I found the book confusing in the way it tends to equate BIM with Integrated Practice, when the two are certainly seperable, if not independent. I don't know of a better book out there at present, but I wish I'd waited for one before buying.

GIS and Archaeological Site Location Modeling Review

GIS and Archaeological Site Location Modeling
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The list of reasons as to why a computer couldn't predict the location of an archaeological site covers at least a page of small type: we don't know where the water was in those times, we don't know the soil type in those days, we don't know the cultural or social values of the time and how they might have influenced site location.
In spite of this, the advent of ever better GIS software and higher performance computers have lead researchers around the world to being using GIS in a predictive manner to help identify potential sites worth investigating.
This book is a summary of research conducted around the world by people attempting to do just that. GIS can of course be used to map teraine and other features such as springs, both those flowing now and those from the past that have left traces. Combining these data with prediction equasions developed by the researcher have produced some interesting studies that point to success.
The book has a series of contributors from around the world: France, Greece, UK, Slovenia, Australia and of course many different organizations in the U.S. This book represents the state of the art in the field as it is known today.

Although archaeologists are using GIS technology at an accelerating rate, publication of their work has not kept pace. A state-of-the-art exploration the subject, GIS and Archaeological Site Location Modeling pulls together discussions of theory and methodology, scale, data, quantitative methods, and cultural resource management and uses location models and case studies to illustrate these concepts. This book, written by a distinguished group of international authors, reassesses the practice of predictive modeling as it now exists and examines how it has become useful in new ways.
A guide to spatial procedures used in archaeology, the book provides a comprehensive treatment of predictive modeling. It draws together theoretical models and case studies and explains how modeling may be applied to future projects. The book illustrates the various aspects of academic and practical applications of predictive modeling. It also discusses the need to assess the reliability of the results and the implications of reliability assessment on the further development of predictive models.
Of the books available on GIS, some touch on archaeological applications but few cover the topic in such depth. Both up to date and containing case studies from a wide range of geographical locations including Europe, the USA, and Australia, this book sets a baseline for future developments.

great book on programming maya mel and api. It is the only references on this material. However my biggest complaint is that the proof reading on these sorts of manuals is just as bad as I have seen. Double negitives, typos galour, confusing examples rule the content here. I sometimes wonder if David Gould speaks english. It is as if he is explaining it to himself and not the reader. Changing emphasis in mid thought really makes for some guesswork on the readers part. A necessary evil, I guess as, I recommend his series whenever someone is asking about mel or the api.

Applying Use Case Driven Object Modeling with UML: An Annotated e-Commerce Example Review

Applying Use Case Driven Object Modeling with UML: An Annotated e-Commerce Example
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
All of the different jobs found in software development are learned in two ways. Either through trial and error on the job or by working through examples. The first is the most effective, but by far the most expensive. While the second is less thorough, it is cheaper and reduces the cost when you make the inevitable move to the first. Since object modeling is always open to many differing interpretations, learning how to create and use them has a slow learning curve. The best approach to learning how to model objects is to find and plow through detailed, complete examples, which of course presupposes that such examples exist. Well, they do and some of the best are found in this book.
The approach is one that maximizes the teaching effectiveness. An Internet bookstore project is created from the beginning. It is large enough to be instructive yet not so large that it becomes unwieldy. The authors then take you through the sequence of steps:
1) Domain Modeling, 2) Use Case Modeling, 3) Requirements Review, 4) Robustness Analysis, 5) Preliminary Design Review, 6) Sequence Diagrams, and 7) Critical Design Review.
What is different about this book is that after the explanation of the development stage, there is a top ten list of common errors made in that stage followed by an example described in UML. The UML diagram includes some of the errors in the list and they are pointed out and explained. This really drives the point of the error home.
The book is a distillation of the experience of the authors as they built a comparable system. They documented the complete process via videotape and then distilled their actions, including errors, down to the material in the book. This has led to some very good examples of how to model development at all stages and will certainly help you avoid some of the most common pitfalls as you make the treacherous, exhaustive and gratifying move from idea to product.

Floodplain Modeling Using HEC-RAS Review

Floodplain Modeling Using HEC-RAS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We all know that practical hydraulic modelling of real-life situations throws up a range of problems that are rarely found in standard text books or software manuals. However, this very comprehensive book covers every scenario that is conceivable - and a few that are not!
It does not dive straight into detailed modelling methods, but explains what tools are available, and stresses the need for planning a modelling study, and, crucially, it includes a full chapter on data requirements - the lack of which is the usual bane of any modeller's life. These chapters needs to be read by anyone who wants to obtain realistic results from a river model.
Although we might think of 'floodplains' as wide open expanses, in fact they tend to be obstructed at intervals with embankments, having bridges and culverts to carry flood flows through them. These structures are fully addressed in the book, with a chapter on each, giving comprehensive guidance on how to model the variety of shapes and conditions that may be encountered in practice.
Modelling is usually required if there is a flooding problem, which may require physical flood alleviation works, so a chapter has been included to give guidance on this aspect of the modeller's work, and how to examine different scheme scenarios and assess their impacts.
However, where the book really surpasses others is in its detailed treament of special cases, which include levees, sluice gates, weirs and split flows - all features that I come across frequently with the legacy of old water mills in the UK, and which can lead to some complex multi-looped systems. Ice cover and ice-jam modelling is also covered, but I don't think I will be needing to use that - especially if the global warming predictions come true!
Other aspects covered include scour and the problems of mobile beds - and this is where having the right data is so important.
The methods of approach for different scenarios cover both steady-state and unsteady-state (hydrodynamic) modelling, but as the latter requires some additional considerations these are covered in a separate chapter.
All-in-all this is an excellent volume, and one that should be beside every modeller's workstation for easy reference. Even modellers who do not use HEC-RAS will find some extremely practical and useful guidance within.

It's very difficult to evaluate the book. There are actually two things to evaluate: (1) the ROOM methodology, and (2) the book publishing ROOM. The ROOM methodology is great: the only complete software development methodology I have ever seen. However the way it is discussed in the book is not an easy reading, even not for an experienced OO developer. Do not give up when you think you have lost. Reread sections until you understand the gist. Eventually, you will be very happy with the new tecniques you learned. I'm quite sure that ROOM is applicable not only for real-time systems. It should be adapted to non-realtime development too. Without reading this book you will not understand UML RealTime implemented by Rational RoseRealTime. My five stars are primarily for ROOM methodology.

Are you looking for a more effective approach to real-time systems development? Real-Time Object-Oriented Modeling The development of real-time distributed systems is one of the most difficult engineering problems ever faced, taxing the capabilities of traditional real-time software development approaches. Real-Time Object-Oriented Modeling is the first book that brings together, in a single harmonious approach, the power of object-oriented concepts tailored specifically for real-time systems, with an iterative and incremental process based on the use of executable models. Developed by practitioners, the proven methodology described here is becoming a leader in the industry. Using a learn-by-example approach, this book offers:* A single consistent set of graphical modeling concepts, chosen to improve developer effectiveness, which apply uniformly to analysis, design, and implementation. This reduces the learning curve to master the entire method and eliminates expensive discontinuities across different stages of development.* An approach to the object paradigm that is easy to learn and that applies to the construction of reusable architectural design components, not just low-level language elements. This unleashes the true power of the object paradigm.* Techniques for constructing executable models to gain early confidence in specifications and design decisions.* Approaches to project management that deliver the benefits of the object paradigm and executable models.

Clay Modeling With Pooh (Learn and Grow)
Average Reviews:

ISBN 0786832231 - The title is really a very poor choice. There had to be at least a handful of options that wouldn't have made it sound like modeling with pooh, rather than modeling with Pooh. Winnie the Pooh and his friends have been a favorite for generations and playing with clay, which is included, is right up there, too.
Pooh and Piglet are playing with clay and showing the reader how to make various things with it. First, the colors you can create by mixing two colors together are shown. Then the fun starts as Pooh makes clay models of his friends, a honey pot and more.
Included with the book, you'll get some clay and cookie cutter-like mold of Pooh. If you get a used copy, it's not complete without those! Author Laura Torres does a decent job of explaining, step by step, how to make the models that Pooh makes in the illustrations by Frances Rigol. Rigol's works are flawless Pooh and Friends. The book is most appropriate for use by older kids, who can read and follow the directions without too much assistance (or the desire to try eating the clay). The clay, they say in the book, will not harden. I find this very unlikely, but have no intention of keeping it long enough to find out. They follow up this claim with a suggestion that you keep it in an airtight container.
