Database Modeling and Design: Logical Design, 4th Edition (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Data Management Systems) Review

Database Modeling and Design: Logical Design, 4th Edition (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Data Management Systems)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I also am a reviewer of the book and an interested colleague. I've used this book since its first edition as my main reference on basic data modeling, and I have been happy to comment on its newer editions. This 4th edition improves on earlier ones by including the Unified Modeling Language (UML), my own first choice for a design language for data modeling. The chapter on the UML includes everything you need, but it keeps it as simple and straightforward as possible, making the material very accessible. The real contribution of the book is in the normalization chapter and in the excellent description and examples of n-ary relationships and the consequences of their multiplicities, a very-hard-to-understand corner of the data modeling world. The inclusion in this edition of material on OLAP and data warehousing is also welcome, though very limited in scope. Finally, moving the physical design material into a separate book makes this book much more cohesive and useful as a reference for data modeling.

The Art of Computer Systems Performance Analysis: Techniques for Experimental Design, Measurement, Simulation, and Modeling Review

The Art of Computer Systems Performance Analysis: Techniques for Experimental Design, Measurement, Simulation, and Modeling
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This seminal book was the most complete mainstream text on the subject when it was first published in 1991. The reason it remains popular eleven years later (which is an extraordinary life for a computer book) is because it's an applied mathematics book that focuses solely on performance analysis, simulation and measurements. Technology may change at a rapid pace, but the techniques for measuring it do not.
The book is broken into six parts consisting of 36 chapters and ten appendices. Part I is an overview of performance evaluation. I liked the chapter on common mistakes and how to avoid them, and the guidelines for selecting techniques and metrics.
Measurement techniques and tools are the focus of Part II. the eight chapters in this part address the full spectrum, including workload types, characterization techniques, capacity planning and benchmarking, and data presentation. Most of the chapters are generic enough to be timeless. The chapters covering execution monitors and accounting logs are showing their age, but the concepts are still valid. I especially liked the chapters about data presentation and ratios.
Part III is a refresher in statistics and probability, and can safely be skipped if your knowledge and skills are fresh. Part IV delves into experimental design and analysis, while Part V covers simulations. The remaining six chapters of the book, Part VI, are devoted to queuing models.
Note that although the math is clearly explained you need college level skills in order to fully comprehend the techniques presented. I recommend investing in MathCAD or a similar program to make it easy to work the exercises that end each chapter.
This book is one of the handful that will be on your bookshelf for years to come. It's probably one of the most frequently referenced works in the performance analysis, resource management and capacity planning knowledge domains. Because it has well designed exercises at the end of each chapter it's also well suited as an advanced college level text. In my opinion it's essential reading for performance and capacity analysts, and provides an excellent foundation for more specialized books, such as those by Menasce and Almeida, that address topics such as e-commerce performance, web services, etc.

Managing Business Complexity: Discovering Strategic Solutions with Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation Review

Managing Business Complexity: Discovering Strategic Solutions with Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
'Managing Business Complexity' is a great start at bridging the significant academic work in complexity science over recent years to business applications. It provides an introduction to agent-based simulations and an overview of the characteristics and advantages of agents, and walks the reader through two illustrative examples. Such examples are especially helpful to readers with little or no previous experience using agent-based models.
Applications of complexity science to business are still in their infancy. As such, the discussion in the book leans towards the academic, and more pointedly towards programmers rather than business practitioners with scant scientific background. Future editions of this book might benefit from including further business applications, and including the impact to bottom line.
This book is highly recommended as an overview of this exciting subject and its applicability to business situations.

Agent-based modeling and simulation (ABMS), a way to simulate a large number of choices by individual actors, is one of the most exciting practical developments in business modeling since the invention of relational databases. It represents a new way to understand data and generate information that has never been available before--a way for businesses to view the future and to understand and anticipate the likely effects of their decisions on their markets and industries. It thus promises to have far-reaching effects on the way that businesses in many areas use computers to support practical decision-making.Managing Business Complexity is the first complete business-oriented agent-based modeling and simulation resource. It has three purposes: first, to teach readers how to think about ABMS, that is, about agents and their interactions; second, to teach readers how to explain the features and advantages of ABMS to other people and third, to teach readers how to actually implement ABMS by building agent-based simulations. It is intended to be a complete ABMS resource, accessible to readers who haven't had any previous experience in building agent-based simulations, or any other kinds of models, for that matter. It is also a collection of ABMS business applications resources, all assembled in one place for the first time. In short, Managing Business Complexity addresses who needs ABMS and why, where and when ABMS can be applied to the everyday business problems that surround us, and how specifically to build these powerful agent-based models.

Finite element methods for approximating partial differential equations that arise in science and engineering analysis find widespread application. Numerical analysis tools make the solutions of coupled physics, mechanics, chemistry, and even biology accessible to the novice modeler. Nevertheless, modelers must be aware of the limitations and difficulties in developing numerical models that faithfully represent the system they are modeling. This textbook introduces the intellectual framework for modeling with Comsol Multiphysics, a package which has unique features in representing multiply linked domains with complex geometry, highly coupled and nonlinear equation systems, and arbitrarily complicated boundary, auxiliary, and initial conditions. But with this modeling power comes great opportunities and great perils. Progressively, in the first part of the book, the novice modeler develops an understanding of how to build up complicated models piecemeal and test them modularly. The second part of the book introduces advanced analysis techniques. The final part of the book deals with case studies in a broad range of application areas including nonlinear pattern formation, thin film dynamics and heterogeneous catalysis, composite and effective media for heat, mass, conductivity, and dispersion, population balances, tomography, multiphase flow, electrokinetic, microfluidic networks, plasma dynamics, and corrosion chemistry. As a revision of Process Modeling and Simulation with Finite Element Methods, this book uses the very latest features of Comsol Multiphysics. There are new case studies on multiphase flow with phase change, plasma dynamics, electromagnetohydrodynamics, microfluidic mixing, and corrosion. In addition, major improvements to the level set method for multiphase flow to ensure phase conservation is introduced.

Management Decision Making: Spreadsheet Modeling, Analysis, and Application Review

Management Decision Making: Spreadsheet Modeling, Analysis, and Application
Average Reviews:

This college-level text is also useful to business and IT professionals because it provides a refresher for decision techniques that are the foundation of a number of disciplines. The book is divided into two parts: (1) deterministic methods, mainly focused on linear programming and optimization, and (2) probability and queuing.
What makes this book valuable to the practicing professional is that it uses one of the most common business tools, Microsoft Excel, and shows how to apply this tool to real world problems. The accompanying CD ROM comes with TreePlan for developing decision trees and CrystalBall for Monte Carlo simulation, as well as workbooks that are used to support the plethora of realistic examples used throughout the book.
Although the book is business-oriented and better suited for operations analysis and MBA students and practitioners, I've used it as a reference for project planning, computer system capacity planning and performance analysis, and IT security risk management - these practical uses of the material show the value of the book in the real world. The supporting web site that the author maintains has materials for lesson plans, errata and additional resources that make this book particularly valuable for the academic and business environments.

Structural Equation Modeling and Natural Systems Review

Structural Equation Modeling and Natural Systems

This book is a wonderful introduction to the utility and conceptual simplicty of SEM for ecologists. There are plenty of deep topics that Grace covers with through explanations that will bring the novice up to speed. While the book does not offer much by the way of actual exampled for software, the associated website, http://www.jamesbgrace.com/ , containing code that works for both AMOS and MPLUS, much of which can also be implemented in R with the SEM module and a little patience and elbow-grease. The only area where the book falls short is on detail that one may desire for more in depth knowledge of just what is going on under the hood in some places. There are, however, several good texts, such as Kline's, Bollen's, and Shipley's that cover these topics (e.g., identifiability of non-recrusive models) in more detail. In summary, a great introductory text for the ecologist who wants to add one of the more powerful and intuitive statistical techniques out there to their belt.

This book presents an introduction to the methodology of structural equation modeling, illustrates its use, and goes on to argue that it has revolutionary implications for the study of natural systems. A major theme of this book is that we have, up to this point, attempted to study systems primarily using methods (such as the univariate model) that were designed only for considering individual processes. Understanding systems requires the capacity to examine simultaneous influences and responses. Structural equation modeling (SEM) has such capabilities. It also possesses many other traits that add strength to its utility as a means of making scientific progress. In light of the capabilities of SEM, it can be argued that much of ecological theory is currently locked in an immature state that impairs its relevance. It is further argued that the principles of SEM are capable of leading to the development and evaluation of multivariate theories of the sort vitally needed for the conservation of natural systems. Supplementary information can be found at the authors website, accessible via www.cambridge.org/9780521837422.- Details why multivariate analyses should be used to study ecological systems - Exposes unappreciated weakness in many current popular analyses - Emphasises the future methodological developments needed to advance our understanding of ecological systems

Learning Autodesk Maya 2008, (Official Autodesk Training Guide, includes DVD): The Modeling & Animation Handbook Review

Learning Autodesk Maya 2008, (Official Autodesk Training Guide, includes DVD): The Modeling and Animation Handbook
Average Reviews:

Official Autodesk Training Guides are a superb investment and this book in particular, is terrific. If you have an intermediate-level of knowledge about Maya, you will find this book moves at a fairly quick pace. Also, if you have a good working knowledge of the Maya interface and its tools, but lack the discipline of a solid production workflow then book will enhance your skills and round out your education.
I am a beginner with only peripheral knowledge of the Maya interface but because the book is so well written I have been able to keep pace and have learned more in the last few weeks than I have gained in the hundreds of hours of parroting the video tutorials available online.
I've spent a small fortune in the last few months buying Maya video tutorials from a couple of different online sources and for the most part, they provide you with all the steps necessary to create the models you see in the videos and expose you to many aspects of the software, but what these videos don't do is explain the "why", which is necessary if you are to grow and take your creativity to the next level.
In all fairness to the authors of these videos, they are working with self-imposed limitations and the knowledge to be gleaned from the videos is only as good as the individual who wrote the lesson guide. Therefore, I decided before I get too far along in my Maya learning experience, I needed a good working knowledge of the fundamentals and who better to provide that than the "official" experts.
Breakout the videos if you want to build a good looking Mitsubishi car in twenty-hours time but buy this book if you plan to "design" the next Mitsubishi car. Therein lies the difference between their videos and this Autodesk series of books; not only do these books explain the "why", they provide the discipline necessary for a dependable production workflow, which is critical if you intend to work in this field.
By the time you finish this book you will know the key concepts and workflows of Maya. You will know the tools and their application. You will learn modeling and animation and understand how they relate to each other in a production pipeline.

I ordered this book last year and have read it many times over. Robert succeeds in s-p-e-l-l-i-n-g out not only how to model, but how to detect patterns and replicate them. Patterns both cognitive and/or physical. He provides a framework upon which to organize all of your resources (NLP and otherwise) to get exactly what you want. What if you looked at the world in a way that everything around you was yours for the *learning* such as things which we label as 'talents', 'athletic skill', or even 'IQ'? What if everyone is truly an example of excellence, and you had the key to replicate that excellence?
I recently went to Rex Sikes' outstanding Master Prac / Modelling Seminar. This book is a welcome addition to the material presented by Rex. For those who haven't signed up for his seminar yet, this is the best book on modelling I've found.

Whether you're a seasoned veteran of the financial markets or a curious student looking to find out what all the fuss is down on Wall Street, "A Fast Track to Structured Finance" has something for you.
This book offers a very detailed approach to managing and analyzing the securitization process utilizing Excel and Visual Basic. What makes this book brilliant is its careful balance of the author's industry knowledge, well designed Excel templates and concise Visual Basic coding.
Bill opens up the book with a discussion of the securitization process. Here we get our first glimpse at his expertise is this subject. During this discussion he details how the integration of VBA and Excel will help streamline the analyst and management of the deal. Interspersed throughout the book are tidbits of history, personal experiences and humor that add to a very entertaining read.
Don't let the size of the book scare you. It's filled with numerous screen shots and code samples that add clarity. And as a bonus, the spreadsheet and code examples can be found on the Wiley website. The Visual Basic coding is incredibly well documented and is portable. You'll find yourself looking for opportunities to apply his unique strategies to your own projects. There are many tips he offers the novice programmer to help ensure that their code is easy to read and understand in the future. This is especially important when you come back to your code months later and wonder why you wrote that "if" statement.
(For those advanced Excel VBA users, check out the code in chapter 13 where Bill discusses the "Ineligible Collateral Report". Very cool.)
Bill also deserves credit for his integration of Excel spreadsheets with Visual Basic.
No longer will you have the fear of, "there's too much data, I need a database".
Bill proves it can all be done in Excel.
Well written, detailed, filled with examples and fun to read. "Where can I find a book on Structured Finance like that?" Look no further...
This is that book.

This book is designed to start with simple examples that progressively develop the reader's confidence to take on more complex tasks. There is very little theoretical discussion about computer science, operations research algorithms, mathematics, or finance. The thrust of the book is to teach the reader to break complex tasks down into simple tasks. It then looks to implement those simple tasks into VBA code using a critical subset of the features of the language.

Game Theory Evolving: A Problem-Centered Introduction to Modeling Strategic Interaction (Second Edition) Review

Game Theory Evolving: A Problem-Centered Introduction to Modeling Strategic Interaction (Second Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Herb Gintis is an economist with a strong interest in the assumptions we make about human rationality in our social, political, and economic theories. He has produced a remarkable and deceptively innovative text that could productively be used in a broad range of fields.
The topic of game theory is interesting to many people because it describes interaction between competitors, presumably helping us pick the best strategy if the circumstances are well enough understood. We might wonder whether the circumstances are well enough understood in daily life to apply the methods of game theory to our own choices, since it usually to assume that we are rational competitors trying to maximize our own gain.
Game Theory Evolving addresses this fascinating question not from a theoretical perspective so much as giving the reader the tools for investigating it themselves in two distinct but complementary ways.
First, it provides practical problem-oriented chapters for learning the principles and thinking in terms of game theoretic methods. The problems are not the usual textbook "who cares, anyway ?" type. Rather they are fun and interesting to solve and often lead to direct insights into real situations.
Second, it extends game theory into the realm of evolutionary thinking, so we not only understand strategic action but we get some deeper insight into how our historical needs shaped our behavior and even our thought processes. Game theory may help explain how we learned to cooperate and why under some conditions we tend to punish cheaters and treat people fairly even though it provides no apparent advantage to us.
Disguised as a lowly academic textbook, Game Theory Evolving is actually a basic toolkit, a passport into the remarkable modern study of evolutionary thinking about human nature, through a practical grounding in the mathematical techniques that have the potential to join our understanding of social sciences and biology.

Modeling the Environment, Second Edition Review

Modeling the Environment, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A highly readable introduction to environmental modeling. What distinguishes the book from other environmental science and environmental modeling works is its interdisciplinary treatment. In particular, the models integrate the physical world and the world of human behavior. Far too many environmental models fail to close the feedbacks between human behavior and the state of the environment, instead taking waste inputs or resource use as exogenous. This book helps students learn to model human behavior (social and economic) as an integral part of the ecological system. The models and software mean the book encourages active learning, and enable students to explore important issues on their own if they choose.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Modeling the Environment, Second Edition

Modeling the Environment was the first textbook in an emerging field-the modeling techniques that allow managers and researchers to see in advance the consequences of actions and policies in environmental management. This new edition brings the book thoroughly up to date and reaffirms its status as the leading introductory text on the subject. System dynamics is one of the most widely known and widely used methods of modeling. The fundamental principles of this approach are demonstrated here with a wide range of examples, including geo-hydrology, population biology, epidemiology and economics. The applications demonstrate the transferability of the systems approach across disciplines, across spatial scales, and across time scales. All of the models are implemented with stock and flow software programs such as Stella and Vensim. These programs are easy and fun to learn, and they allow students to develop realistic models within the first few weeks of a college course. System dynamics has emerged as the most common approach in collaborative projects to address environmental problems. The stock and flow structures and the emphasis on feedback control provide a common language that is understood by scientists from many disciplines. Although the interdisciplinary approach described here is widely used in practice, there are few books to aid instruction. Modeling the Environment meets the urgent need for instructional materials in interdisciplinary modeling of environmental systems.

Hierarchical Modeling and Analysis for Spatial Data (Chapman & Hall/CRC Monographs on Statistics & Applied Probability) Review

Hierarchical Modeling and Analysis for Spatial Data (Chapman and Hall/CRC Monographs on Statistics and Applied Probability)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've bought several spatial statistics books over the years and found they generally fall into one of two categories; oversimplified or cover-to-cover matrix notation, neither of which is very useful for my research. However, this book is "just right," bridging these two extremes. It briefly covers the basics of both point and areal analysis, then gives the reader the tools for more advanced (i.e., realistic) analysis. They devote a chapter to Bayesian basics, which is needed for the last 4 or 5 chapters. The last few chapters weave together a detailed discussion on a variety of hierarchical models and current published results. Most importantly this book offers quite a bit of the necessary R and Winbugs code. Although many of their examples are from the public health world, the techniques and code are easily adapted to natural resource data - my personal focus.

Among the many uses of hierarchical modeling, their application to the statistical analysis of spatial and spatio-temporal data from areas such as epidemiology And environmental science has proven particularly fruitful. Yet to date, the few books that address the subject have been either too narrowly focused on specific aspects of spatial analysis, or written at a level often inaccessible to those lacking a strong background in mathematical statistics.Hierarchical Modeling and Analysis for Spatial Data is the first accessible, self-contained treatment of hierarchical methods, modeling, and data analysis for spatial and spatio-temporal data. Starting with overviews of the types of spatial data, the data analysis tools appropriate for each, and a brief review of the Bayesian approach to statistics, the authors discuss hierarchical modeling for univariate spatial response data, including Bayesian kriging and lattice (areal data) modeling. They then consider the problem of spatially misaligned data, methods for handling multivariate spatial responses, spatio-temporal models, and spatial survival models. The final chapter explores a variety of special topics, including spatially varying coefficient models. This book provides clear explanations, plentiful illustrations --some in full color--a variety of homework problems, and tutorials and worked examples using some of the field's most popular software packages.. Written by a team of leaders in the field, it will undoubtedly remain the primary textbook and reference on the subject for years to come.
