This text is an extensive and modern treatment of reliability with many practical case studies. It covers many of the standard topics including most of the topics covered in the recent book by Meeker and Escobar (1998) "Statistical Methods for Reliability Data". It is unique in its coverage of warranties (Chapter 17). These authors are very knowledgeable about the literature on warranty analysis and have edited the Product Warranty Handbook published by Marcel Dekker in 1996 and published their own text dedicated solely to that topic ("Warranty Cost Analysis" published by Marcel Dekker in 1994). Emphasis is placed on case studies which are discussed up front in the Overview chapter and treated in detail in Chapter 19.

A "quick look up guide," Electricity Cost Modeling Calculations places the relevant formulae and calculations at the reader's finger tips. In this book, theories are explained in a nutshell and then the calculation is presented and solved in an illustrated, step-by-step fashion. A valuable guide for new engineers, economists (or forecasters), regulators, and policy makers who want to further develop their knowledge of best practice calculations techniques or experienced practitioners (and even managers) who desire to acquire more useful tips, this book offers expert advice for using such cost models to determine optimally-sized distribution systems and optimally-structured power supplying entities. In other words, this book provides an Everything-that-you-want-to-know-about-cost-modelling-for-electric-utilities (but were afraid to ask) approach to modelling the cost of supplying electricity. In addition, the author covers the concept of multiproduct and multistage cost functions, which are appropriate in modelling the cost of supplying electricity. The author has done all the heavy number-crunching, and provides the reader with real-world, practical examples of how to properly quantify the costs associated with providing electric service, thus increasing the accuracy of the results and support for the policy initiatives required to ensure the competitiveness of the power suppliers in this new world in which we are living.

The principles contained herein could be employed to assist in the determination of the cost-minimizing amount of output (i.e., electricity), which could then be used to determine whether a merger between two entities makes sense (i.e., would increase profitability). Other examples abound: public regulatory commissions also need help in determining whether mergers (or divestitures) are welfare-enhancing or not; ratemaking policies depend on costs and properly determining the costs of supplying electric (or gas, water, and local telephone) service. Policy makers, too, can benefit in terms of optimal market structure; after all, the premise of deregulation of the electric industry was predicated on the idea that generation could be deregulated. Unfortunately, the economies of vertical integration between the generation.
A comprehensive guide to the cost issues surrounding the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity;Real-world examples that are practical, meaningful, and easy to understand;Policy implications and suggestions to aid in the formation of the optimal market structure going forward (thus increasing efficiency of electric power suppliers) The principles contained herein could be employed to assist in the determination of the cost-minimizing amount of output

This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone conducting physical modeling of hydraulic systems. It is the bible. It has everything that one needs to know about hydraulic modeling. I'm using it as a reference for my Masters Thesis, and I feel like more of my text is coming from this book than from my own head. My only complaint is it could cover experimental methods and verification also.

Financial Modelling in Practice: A Concise Guide for Intermediate and Advanced Level (The Wiley Finance Series) Review

Financial Modelling in Practice: A Concise Guide for Intermediate and Advanced Level (The Wiley Finance Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Michael Rees succeeds to a large extent in his endeavor of writing a text that addresses the financial modeling process instead of Excel functionality, financial theory, or mathematical models. To his credit, Rees has put together a large number of useful modeling examples in the CD-ROM that is sold with the text. Rees' book assumes that readers have at least an intermediate knowledge of both statistical and financial concepts.
After reviewing select Excel functions and tools relevant to financial modeling, Rees gives his audience of modelers many practical tips about how to design, structure, and build models that are relevant, accurate, and easily understandable. Whoever has experience with models will probably agree with Rees when he writes that the majority of models built are in practice of mediocre quality. Someone other than the author of the model will often experience several challenges in dealing with the model at hand, i.e., too much time spent on understanding the model, complexity of the auditing and validating processes, hard to share with others, over-reliance on the original modeler to maintain or use it, lack of clarity of objectives, and presence of errors and implicit assumptions.
Rees then goes into the modeling of financial statements that is often required in the world of corporate finance for forecasting profit and cash, assessing financing requirements, analyzing credit risk and valuation, etc. This chapter is a little gem. It contains many practical tips. Once again, readers will be reminded that there is not always 100% agreement on the definition of some financial concepts.
Rees then uses Palisade Corporation's add-ins @RISK and PrecisionTree for many modeling examples in the two chapters that he dedicates to risk modeling and real option modeling, respectively. Having some understanding of both statistical and financial concepts is particularly important here to benefit from reading both chapters. Probably, many readers with an advanced knowledge of Excel 2007 will regret that the above-mentioned functionality that Palisade Corporation offers has not yet been systematically integrated into at least Microsoft Office Professional.
Finally, Rees discusses the use of Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) in a range of practical financial modeling situations. Rees points out that many otherwise competent modelers never learn VBA. For this reason, Rees makes the assumption that his audience is not very familiar with VBA. Rees shows how macros, i.e., subroutines and user-defined functions, can be used in a variety of modeling contexts.
In conclusion, Rees has made a valuable contribution to the field of financial modeling. The CD-ROM that is sold with the text plays a key role in achieving this objective.

Heavy-Tail Phenomena: Probabilistic and Statistical Modeling (Springer Series in Operations Research and Financial Engineering)

Sid Resnick taught me stochastic processes when I was a graduate student at Stanford. He is an exceptional lecturer who really stimulates the students. I don't think I ever had a boring lecture from him even though probability theory and stochastic processes can at times be very dry subjects.
Over the many years since then Sid has moved on and spent many fruitful years at Colorado State and now Cornell. In addition to his many excellent papers and his fine collaborative work with Richard Davis, he has written a large number of very interesting and thought provoking texts on extreme value theory, stochastic processes and probability theory. I have a deep appreciation for his contributions to the theory of extremes as that has also been one of my research areas and was the topic of my Ph.D. dissertation. This is the second outstanding book Resnick has written on extremes. This one has more of a modelling flavor to it with an eye toward financial applications. It seems these days that much of the research in time series modelling and stochastic processes is motivated by applications in finance. This is certainly also the case with extreme value models as can be seen by the many fine books on extremes that have appeared recently.
This book shows the theory and applications of models for heavy-tailed distributions. Resnick makes a very good point about insurance claim cost. This was certainly a phenomena I had to deal with when modeling workers compensation insurance claims at Risk Data Corporation. It is also interesting to see coverage about what is needed to consistently estimate extreme values by bootstrapping.
Time series models that deal with heavy-tailed distributions are also mentioned.

I had to learn formZ for my profession and I've gone to great lengths to do so. I had already taken two courses from different instructors and I was still feeling very unstable and was about to start a new job where I really needed the skills. Stressed-out and feeling at a loss, I did a search on the web and found this book for the new 4.0. While I already had a great understanding of the program, this book showed me so many ways to do things I had not yet been taught and I was able to do it on my own. The information is clearly laid out and easy to understand. Icons let you reference exactly where to go but the best part was the tutorials. I have not been able to find in any class or supporting material that came with the software, tutorials that let you practice. This was the most helpful as it's never enough to just know what everything does. You need to implement the info. This book saved my life (and probably my career!!)

Circuit Simulation with SPICE OPUS: Theory and Practice (Modeling and Simulation in Science, Engineering and Technology) Review

Circuit Simulation with SPICE OPUS: Theory and Practice (Modeling and Simulation in Science, Engineering and Technology)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Of all the SPICE books on my shelf (>20) this is probably the most important book on the basics of SPICE. There are plenty of good books on how to use SPICE; most focus on PSPICE, ISSPICE, HSPICE, or other commercial flavors of SPICE. Nothing wrong with after market documentation and commercial SPICE simulations; the commercial versions are certainly worth the price if you are a professional working for a company that has a liberal budget for CAD tools. Enter the SPICE OPUS team (and let's not forget the equally important Spice3 project, ngSpice, which is open source). If you are a user of SPICE OPUS, boasting over 10,000 users worldwide, or ngSpice, this book may very well be what you need if you are a novice of the classic SPICE3/Nutmeg software originating at Berkeley.
The SPICE OPUS team since the 1990s offers a free version of SPICE based on SPICE 3f4. SPICE OPUS is used worldwide in the area of research, education, and industry. This book is more than a well written user's guide of SPICE OPUS, it is the Crème de la Crème of SPICE user's manual. Inside you will find detailed information on the SPICE OPUS simulator. As the back cover of this book mentions, "This book is the first complete guide to analog circuit design using the circuit simulator software package SPICE OPUS". That said, there is a topic I was disappointed not to find in this edition: sensitivity analysis using the SPICE .SENSE control card. There is very little information on this aspect of SPICE yet this is an important topic for serious circuit designers.
Despite a missing topic, I believe this book is perfect for serious SPICE OPUS user (the target audience of the book), ngSpice users, and other SPICE flavors. SPICE users that have access to commercial versions, in my opinion, may find this book supplements their understanding of how SPICE works internally (I.E. your mileage may vary due to vendor customization of a particular version of SPICE). ngSpice user's would probably find this book valuable to gain an understand of SPICE internals when using or reading the source code. Near and dear to my interests, amateur radio, experimenters that want to apply circuit simulation tools to analog designs may find this book an excellent guide.
Individuals new to SPICE3 may wish to start with chapters 2, 3 and 4 where the authors bring you up to speed on how to use SPICE3 and NUTMEG (chapter 2), the SPICE3 input file format (chapter 3) and and overview of the analysis options (Chapter 4). The reader will them most likely move on the the following chapters to gain more expertise on advanced SPICE3 operation such as how to script NUTMEG, the mathematics behind SPICE3 and the details on how to control the output. I found chapter 1 to be an excellent introduction to circuit simulation, but chapter 1 is not necessary to learn how to use SPICE3 (although I recommend reading chapter 1 at some point).
Summarizing, this book is fantastic resource for the SPICE OPUS user and ngSpice user, and SPICE purest. For the commercial SPICE user, this book would probably be useful for additional insight into SPICE internals and may help explain certain issues with your version of SPICE. Note that this book is specific to SPICE3. SPICE2 is still available, but many recent versions of SPICE release focus on SPICE3.

This book is suitable for my graduate studies on computer performance. The author directs us from combinatorics, distribution theory, queue theory to queueing networks in a systematic way. I have read the book at ease for its stepwise elaboration of concepts. However, I have also read with hardship as it requires the readers to possess a good command of mathematics, both pure and applied, in order to go through the book.
For a mathematics graduate studying computer networks, I recommend this book. A novice or a mediocrity should pay more patience to read if not yet at a loss.
This book has aroused my interest and eagerness to know more about computer performance from the viewpoint of queueing and networking. In a word, I enjoy reading this book.

This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to probability and stochastic processes, and shows how these subjects may be applied in computer performance modelling. The author's aim is to derive the theory in a way that combines its formal, intuitive, and applied aspects so that students may apply this indispensable tool in a variety of different settings. Readers are assumed to be familiar with elementary linear algebra and calculus, including the concept of limit, but otherwise this book provides a self-contained approach suitable for graduate or advanced undergraduate students. The first half of the book covers the basic concepts of probability including expectation, random variables, and fundamental theorems. In the second half of the book the reader is introduced to stochastic processes. Subjects covered include renewal processes, queueing theory, Markov processes, and reversibility as it applies to networks of queues. Examples and applications are drawn from problems in computer performance modelling.

Modeling Classic Combat Aircraft Review

The main value of this book comes from its three refference tables of paint colors, one for general country colors, and the other two tables for US, and Japan colors. All the tables list six possible manufacturers for the paint color and gives the manufacturer's stock number if they product that color.
The other chapter's simply appear to be a compilation of acticles from FineScale Modeler's magazine. So if you have read the magazine before then you will know the basic format of the chapters, where each chapter covers the construction of a model kit from box to shelf. The book covers different techniques from scratchbuilding new parts and altering the planes body, to drybrushing and weathering techniques. Overall I would say for begingers this is a valuable book to have on your shelf, but for experienced modlers I could only recommend it for the refference tables.
