Curves and Surfaces in Geometric Modeling: Theory & Algorithms (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Computer Graphics) Review

Curves and Surfaces in Geometric Modeling: Theory and Algorithms (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Computer Graphics)
Average Reviews:

This is a great book, definitely the best among the various books on geometric design and CAGD (other good ones include Farin, Mortsenson, Piegl and Tiller, Hoscheck and Lasser). It is not as encyclopedic as the sources listed above, but it a lot more coherent and a lot clearer, because it follows the unifying concept of blossoming. As a result, one gets multiple complementary views of polynomial curves and surfaces: algebraic, geometric, combinatorial, and algorithmic. For example, we can see where the Bernstein polynomials come from, instead of mysteriously being dropped from the sky. The systematic use of blossoms (polar forms) is particularly elegant in the presentation of surfaces, where it clarifies greatly the differences between rectangular and triangular patches. The discussion of subdivision versions of the de Casteljau algorithm is very thorough and unique. Gallier's book is also the only book to discuss subdivision surfaces in some detail (Doo-Sabin, Catmull-Clark, and Loop). In particular, an analysis of the convergence of Loop's scheme is given. For this, the author gives a remarkable crash course on the discrete Fourier transform. However, this chapter is too dense and should have been split. Also, much more pictures are needed. It seems that the author was in a rush. The appendix on vector spaces is gorgeous, and the one on differentials is also excellent. This book is highly recommended to mathematically inclined readers interested in geometric modeling and computer graphics. Too bad that applications to medicine such as organ modeling, or to computer animation, are not presented. Nevertheless, Mathematica code is provided for most of the algorithms. A web site would be helpful.

Curves and Surfaces for Geometric Design offers both a theoretically unifying understanding of polynomial curves and surfaces and an effective approach to implementation that you can bring to bear on your own work-whether you're a graduate student, scientist, or practitioner.

Inside, the focus is on "blossoming"-the process of converting a polynomial to its polar form-as a natural, purely geometric explanation of the behavior of curves and surfaces. This insight is important for far more than its theoretical elegance, for the author proceeds to demonstrate the value of blossoming as a practical algorithmic tool for generating and manipulating curves and surfaces that meet many different criteria. You'll learn to use this and related techniques drawn from affine geometry for computing and adjusting control points, deriving the continuity conditions for splines, creating subdivision surfaces, and more.

The product of groundbreaking research by a noteworthy computer scientist and mathematician, this book is destined to emerge as a classic work on this complex subject. It will be an essential acquisition for readers in many different areas, including computer graphics and animation, robotics, virtual reality, geometric modeling and design, medical imaging, computer vision, and motion planning.
* Achieves a depth of coverage not found in any other book in this field.* Offers a mathematically rigorous, unifying approach to the algorithmic generation and manipulation of curves and surfaces. * Covers basic concepts of affine geometry, the ideal framework for dealing with curves and surfaces in terms of control points.* Details (in Mathematica) many complete implementations, explaining how they produce highly continuous curves and surfaces.* Presents the primary techniques for creating and analyzing the convergence of subdivision surfaces (Doo-Sabin, Catmull-Clark, Loop).* Contains appendices on linear algebra, basic topology, and differential calculus.

Modeling Financial Markets : Using Visual Basic.NET and Databases to Create Pricing, Trading, and Risk Management Models

This is a "How To Program" book which uses financial applications as samples. It is heavy on programming basics and scratches the surface of financial modeling. That's fine if that's what you expect from the book, but the title led me to believe that I'd learn modeling techniques. I expected a book that assumed proficiency in VB and dealt with moderate to advanced financial topics.
If you already know what a where clause is and are proficient at VB.Net, this is not for you. If you know nothing about VB and want to learn it using interesting examples, this is for you.

Tracking the Mobility of Crime: New Methodologies and Geographies in Modeling the Diffusion of Offending Review

Tracking the Mobility of Crime: New Methodologies and Geographies in Modeling the Diffusion of Offending
Average Reviews:

Porter's study successfully integrates recent attempts to spatialize the quantitative analysis of reported crime on both theoretical and analytical grounds. His tour de force of combining sub-county geographies with administrative-level crime reports to the FBI and the use of cutting-edge spatial statistics sets a new bar for criminologists who wish to speak to the ecology of crime. The founders of the Chicago School who traded on Galpin's use of maps must be smiling!
Furthermore, while his use of federally collected data of reported criminal offending is used for substantive purposes, it is obvious that this work holds much potential beyond criminology. In fact, it is applicable to the fields of statistics, demography, sociology, and criminology. The application and replication of this research with any aggregate-level count data makes the research an extremely useful tool for any research involving the use of aggregate level count data.

Recently, increased attention has been given to the social and environmental context in which criminal offending occurs. This new interest in the human ecology of crime is largely demographic, both in terms of subject matter and increasingly in terms of the analytic methods. Building on existing literature within the social ecology of crime, this study introduces a new approach to developing and examining sub-county geographies of reported crime through the use of existing census place and county definitions coupled with spatial demographic methods. This process of spatially decomposing counties into Census places and what Esselstyn (1953) earlier called 'open country,' or non-places, allows for the development of a unique, but phenomenologically appropriate sub-county geography. The new sub-county geography substantively holds meaning jurisdictionally given the current organization of the criminal justice system as well as demographically in the conceptualization of 'rural' and 'urban' in the demographic analysis of crime. Using 1990 and 2000 Agency-level Uniform Crime Report data in conjunction with recently developed spatial statistics, significant processes of spatial mobility in regards to the spread of criminal activity are identified. This represents an extension and adaptation of current and evolving methods used in identifying processes of the spatial diffusion of crime.

This book provided an excellent explanation of the modeling of solutes and groundwater that conveyed a very good understanding of the challenges and methods used without resorting to the use of mathematical sophistication that actual ground water modelers no doubt possess.
In other words, I think that this book would benefit both those that are hydrologists and geologists as well as those that have had some training in environemental site assessment and remediation but have not been exposed to the actual number crunching that is essential for doing actual simulations.

The challenges facing groundwater scientists and engineers today demand expertise in a wide variety of disciplines–geology, hydraulics, geochemistry, geophysics, and biology. As the number of the subdisciplines has increased and as each has become more complex and quantitative, the problem of integrating their concepts and contributions into a coherent overall interpretation has become progressively more difficult. To an increasing degree transport simulation has emerged as an answer to this problem, and the transport model has become a vehicle for integrating the vast amount of field data from a variety of sources and for understanding the relationship of various physical, chemical, and biological processes.
Applied Contaminant Transport Modeling is the first resource designed to provide coverage of the discipline's basic principles, including the theories behind solute transport in groundwater, common numerical techniques for solving transport equations, and step-by-step guidance on the development and use of field-scale modeling. The Second Edition incorporates recent advances in contaminant transport theory and simulation techniques, adding the following to the original text:
-An expanded discussion of the role of aquifer heterogeneity in controlling solute transport-A new section on the dual-domain mass transfer approach as an alternative to the classical advection-dispersion model-Additional chemical processes and reactions in the discussion of reactive transport-A discussion of the TVD (total-variation-diminishing) approach to transport solution-An entirely new Part III containing two chapters on simulation of flow and transport under variable water density and under variable saturation, respectively, and a third chapter on the use of the simulation-optimization approach in remediation system design
Applied Contaminant Transport Modeling, Second Edition remains the premier reference for practicing hydrogeologists, environmental scientists, engineers, and graduate students in the field. In 1998, in recognition of their work on the first edition, the authors were honored with the John Hem Excellence in Science and Engineering Award of the National Ground Water Association

Design and Modeling for Computer Experiments (Chapman & Hall/CRC Computer Science & Data Analysis) Review

Design and Modeling for Computer Experiments (Chapman and Hall/CRC Computer Science and Data Analysis)
Average Reviews:

The book covers several important computer modelling ideas, that have seen widespread use in many fields. One such idea is simulated annealing. A concept originating in physics, perhaps during the 50s or 60s. You can see how the concept of temperature is generalised to some suitable key parameter. And how by increasing this temperature, and using it in a probability distribution that is often just a Maxwell-Boltzmann decaying exponential, you can sample a parameter space. Elegant concept.
Then there are evolutionary ideas. Where you might apply competition between various test solutions, to find the most effective. And then mix "genetically" the parameters of these solutions, to hopefully find even better answers.
Fang does a good job of explaining the broad concepts of these and other ideas. Along with detailed examples that show how useful implementations.

Computer simulations based on mathematical models have become ubiquitous across the engineering disciplines and throughout the physical sciences. Successful use of a simulation model, however, requires careful interrogation of the model through systematic computer experiments. While specific theoretical/mathematical examinations of computer experiment design are available, those interested in applying proposed methodologies need a practical presentation and straightforward guidance on analyzing and interpreting experiment results.Written by authors with strong academic reputations and real-world practical experience, Design and Modeling for Computer Experiments is exactly the kind of treatment you need. The authors blend a sound, modern statistical approach with extensive engineering applications and clearly delineate the steps required to successfully model a problem and provide an analysis that will help find the solution. Part I introduces the design and modeling of computer experiments and the basic concepts used throughout the book. Part II focuses on the design of computer experiments. The authors present the most popular space-filling designs - like Latin hypercube sampling and its modifications and uniform design - including their definitions, properties, construction and related generating algorithms. Part III discusses the modeling of data from computer experiments. Here the authors present various modeling techniques and discuss model interpretation, including sensitivity analysis. An appendix reviews the statistics and mathematics concepts needed, and numerous examples clarify the techniques and their implementation. The complexity of real physical systems means that there is usually no simple analytic formula that sufficiently describes the phenomena. Useful both as a textbook and professional reference, this book presents the techniques you need to design and model computer experiments for practical problem solving.

Micro, Nanosystems and Systems on Chips: Modeling, Control, and Estimation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The chapters show how far the field has progressed since the 1980s and the first generation of Atomic Force Microscopes. Now the modelling of the forces experienced on the atomic scale of a surface is quite sophisticated and quantitative. The text describes how current AFMs can measure forces in the sub-nanoNewton range.
Various experimental configurations are summarised, with enough detail given for the reader to understand the salient features. Much of the physics is classical, including references to results in statistical physics that are used to derive functions for noise.
Perhaps most interesting to some readers will be the section on the teleoperation of a micromanipulator, where, and this is the key point, there is multisensory feedback. Virtual reality is used to aid the operator, and the hardware includes a haptic interface that delivers the feedback. The amount of virtual immersion is varied, in an effort to see what minimal amount would suffice to let the operator do useful work. The experiments are very promising, especially in how they appear to let the operator use less mental effort, and thus be able to work for longer times with a manipulator.

Micro and nanosystems represent a major scientific and technological challenge, with actual and potential applications in almost all fields of the human activity. The aim of the present book is to present how concepts from dynamical control systems (modeling, estimation, observation, identification, feedback control) can be adapted and applied to the development of original very small-scale systems and of their human interfaces. The application fields presented here come from micro and nanorobotics, biochips, near-field microscopy (AFM and STM) and nanosystems networks. Alina Voda has drawn contributions from leading experts at top research universities in France to produce a first overview of the major role that control systems science can play in the development of micro and nanosciences and technologies.

Wireless Personal Communications: Channel Modeling and Systems Engineering (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science) Review

Wireless Personal Communications: Channel Modeling and Systems Engineering (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The field of wireless personal communications is experiencing rapid growth worldwide. Most clearly seen in the huge uptake of cellphones in Europe, Japan and, to a lesser extent, the United States and China. Plus, WiFi has taken off strongly in the developed world, with enhanced 802.11 standards being quickly solidified and adopted.
This volume, as of its writing in 2000, describes much of the engineering and theoretical underpinning of this field. It does not have the 802.11 standards that came out after 2000, but much of the book is still very germane. There is no lack of research interest in this field, driven in no small part by the anticipation that nomadic computer and the rise of the pervasive Web have yet to occur. Still early days for those, we hope.
The field contains tough issues, as may be seen in several papers in the book. In earlier decades, wireless communications were often to and from antennas at fixed locations, with ample power. Or, if the antennas were mobile, like on planes, usually power was not a consideration. Nor the possible maximum length of the antennas. But in modern personal mobile uses, the constraints are far tighter. Power must be minimized, and you cannot draw out a one meter antenna.
Which gives great potential for researchers like yourself to invent and commercialise new applications, if you can overcome these challenges, aided perhaps by ideas in this book!

Guyon has done research in the theory of random fields. This text was first published in French in 1992 and then translated to English and published by Springer-Verlag in 1995. This theory is rapidly developing and there have been many new advances over the nine years since the publication of this work. Nevertheless it contains a good theoretical development and treatment of the theory and provides applications to image processing.
The important results on stochastic algorithms are covered in Chapter Six which includes the results on Gibbs sampling that first had a big impact on spatial modeling and image processing through the work of the Gemans. Later it was recognized to be a special case of Markov Chain Monte Carlo modeling that is now so crucial to the practical implementation of Bayesian statistical methods.
The book contains an excellent list of over 175 references.

The theory of spatial models over lattices, or random fields as they are known, has developed significantly over recent years. This book provides a graduate-level introduction to the subject which assumes only a basic knowledge of probability and statistics, finite Markov chains, and the spectral theory of second-order processes. A particular strength of this book is its emphasis on examples - both to motivate the theory which is being developed, and to demonstrate the applications which range from statistical mechanics to image analysis and from statistics to stochastic algorithms.

This book is unique as the first effort to expound on the subject of systematic scaling analysis. Not written for a specific discipline, the book targets any reader interested in transport phenomena and reaction processes. The book is logically divided into chapters on the use of systematic scaling analysis in fluid dynamics, heat transfer, mass transfer, and reaction processes. An integrating chapter is included that considers more complex problems involving combined transport phenomena. Each chapter includes several problems that are explained in considerable detail. These are followed by several worked examples for which the general outline for the scaling is given. Each chapter also includes many practice problems.
This book is based on recognizing the value of systematic scaling analysis as a pedagogical method for teaching transport and reaction processes and as a research tool for developing and solving models and in designing experiments. Thus, the book can serve as both a textbook and a reference book.

The mind is pulsed to manic highs for short periods of time to train the mind slowly to cope with and control its mania.Models are given to allow the mind to discover itself. The mind must be aware of its emotional scars to cure itself. Techniques are much simpler than Freud's method's for evaluating the mind. The mind is cured through understanding (mind models) and physical exercises, psychophysiotherapy. Emotional Mind Modeling (1995) is the first book written by Hugh Drummond Fulcher. It includes original self-healing exercises and spiritual models to improve spiritual communication and deepen faith. This book includes several technical disciplines to develop healing processes and spiritual models not included in later books. Healing processes become more effective and pleasant over the years. Patience is required, but sanity is worth any price. Emotional Mind Modeling leads readers through difficulties of coping with and healing bipolar disorder. The solution is like a vaccination. The mind is briefly stressed to limits and then calmed back down so when real stress comes along the mind is more prepared to cope. Simple mind models provide feelings of understanding an unstable bipolar mind. Reading this book assists understanding the evolution of his later books: 1) Bipolar Blessings & Mind Expansion and 2) God the Universe & You! Emotional Mind Modeling begins with the author s healing processes. His cure of bipolar disorder inspired science based interpretations of the Bible, renewal of his faith, and other spiritual models. The author has strengthened his faith through science reasoning not simply emotional memorization. Before science, spiritual interpretations by biblical leaders and writers were amazing. The author has survived depression, severe manic episodes, and near-death. Mental healing blended into spiritual healing. Practicing unique psychiatric exercises initiated physical changes to the brain that cured the author s bipolar disorder. A connection between unique physical exercises and mental healing has been discovered covered. Muscles and the brain grow in ability only when briefly stressed to limits. The author has not had depression or manic episodes for over 14 years - a true cure. Emotional Mind Modeling was the foundation for his work.In 1995, a chemical imbalance was the only accepted cause of bipolar disorder. In Emotional Mind Modeling, the author proposed that childhood traumatized neural networks construct mental processing limits. With stress and trauma in later life, childhood emotional network limits are overstressed or ruptured resulting in bipolar disorder. Subconscious processes feverishly search for lost limits causing a chemical imbalance. This work focuses on physics rather than chemistry to cure bipolar disorder. In 1995, the mental health community and radio talk shows would not accept neural network disruptions as the cause of bipolar disorder. Today, mental health researchers are studying neural networks of healthy and bipolar brains to determine physical changes causing bipolar disorder. When attempting to complete Emotional Mind Modeling, the author received unexpected, inner, and shattering words from God. These words inspired spiritual focus and were more believable than any words heard or read. Writing became spiritual.Spiritual models begin with creative models of nothing which exploded into the universe and God 15 billion years ago. Nothing had sufficient properties to create God and the universe and evolution of the universe and man. Nothing models God as the beginning of time.To understand a famous architect or artist, we study his work and what others have said or written about his life. If we wish to understand God, we study what religious leaders and writers have said and written about Him. We must also study His work - the universe, and spiritual messages we have received.God s spiritual communications and relationships to man are modeled. Reactor modeling experience helped model the brain, mind, and God. Recurring activities in nature can be proven as laws with science. We must have faith for everyday activities which do not recur in nature.
